Cynthia Carter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 25, 2025.
Cynthia Anne Carter, age 70, passed away peacefully earlier this week at her home in Birmingham, Alabama. Cynthia was born in Carthage, Missouri on December 6, 1954 to Charles Junior Carter and Gloria Baker Carter. She lived in Carthage until she graduated from Missouri Southern State College. She then obtained a Master's Degree at the University of Missouri and finally a Doctorate of Philosophy at Cornell University. Cynthia was a professor of Healthcare Administration teaching at St. Louis University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and finally rising to Chair of the Department of Healthcare Administration at the Kansas University Medical Center. After an accomplished 20-plus year career in academics, Cynthia followed God's calling to attend seminary. She received a Master of Divinity degree from the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas and subsequently served as rector at St. Anne's Church in Lee's Summit, Kansas, then as rector of St. Mary's Church in Andalusia, Alabama. After retirement, Cynthia returned to Birmingham where she volunteered at the children's hospital, meals on wheels, and various feeding ministries in Birmingham. She didn't stay retired long and returned to serve All Saints' Episcopal Church in Homewood, Alabama in 2023 until she just recently took her second retirement. Cynthia was passionate about her family, her faith, and service to her community. She was a fierce advocate for justice and peace, she truly lived out her faith and worked tirelessly to make our world more like the kingdom of God.

Cynthia was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Walker, son-in-law Matthew Walker, and granddaughter Betty Walker as well as her brother Craig Carter, his wife Lee Carter, and their children Zachary and Abigail Carter. She also leaves behind a host of friends and colleagues whom she cherished dearly.

A memorial service will be held at All Saints' Episcopal Church on Thursday August 28th at 2:00 pm. Flowers can be sent to the church or memorial donations can be given to:

Cindy was my cousin. We grew up together. I can't even begin to count the number of nights we stayed together at either her childhood home or my parents'. As I listened to Craig's eulogy today, I smiled and had such wonderful thoughts and memories. Craig described it as choosing to love. I always say love is a verb. Cindy demonstrated that in so many ways. She walked the talk every single day. She and I had many exchanges online of societal events. She always stood up for the marginalized and sought justice always. I was hoping she would make a return visit to see me, but it wasn't to be. I will miss our "chats," dear one. You gave us all an inspired example of a life well lived!

Although I hadn't seen Cindy in person for awhile, we kept in touch via Facebook and text. She and Liz came to visit me in Puerto Rico, and it was as if time had not passed. I'll cherish that trip forever!

Elizabeth I´m so sorry for your loss. I´ve only known your mom a few years, when she started attending St Andrews and would fill in for our rector at times. Her homilies were beautiful as was she. Cindy walked with us in the Pride parade, she was there every month at bingo and we all adored her. She will be truly missed by all. Prayers for you and the family.
