Daisy Humphries Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 17, 2025.
Daisy Ellen Humphries, lovingly known as "Tootsie", went to be with her Lord on July 11, 2025, age 82.

Tootsie was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on September 13th, 1942 to Roy and Daisy Hay. She had the privilege of a happy childhood, surrounded by extended family and friends, and graduated from Albuquerque High in 1960.

Tootsie had a distinguished career in Personnel Management at The Lincoln National Forrest Service for several decades while raising her family. Her life was peppered with stories of her accomplishments and exciting adventures. On more than one occasion, Tootsie could be found at the active fire sites. These temporary camps offered little more than a sleeping bag and a hard patch of ground for rest, but she never complained. She made sure the firefighters and first responders received their pay! Another special assignment within her professional duties included her super-hero role as "Woodsy the Owl" for the kids! Anyone who knew Tootsie understood she was a strong and capable (not to mention, beautiful) woman. She was fiercely independent, and yet under her armor, was her very tender childlike heart. Many will remember her for her gift of seizing the moment...her love of seasonal changes, holidays and ANY opportunity to decorate and celebrate! In fact, one of Tootsie's favorite past times was shopping...a passion she shared with her mother. She was a generous, thoughtful gift-giver... Wherever her travels took her, she returned home with souvenirs to share her experiences, and if there was something she admired, she would often purchase matching gifts to share with her family and friends.

Tootsie was a loyal sister who supported and cared for her brother, Leroy, during his final days, and for many years, she dedicated herself and time to caring for her mother, Daisy B. Hay. Apart from lunches or shopping outings, many days were spent sitting with her mother, keeping her company, or engaged in nightly phone conversations while at at the Farm or Ranch.

Speaking of memories of The Farm or Ranch, Tootsie, known as "Gramms" to her grandchildren, also loved entertaining and hosting family and friends. Her enthusiasm and joy was contagious...Listening to her stories about "her favorite cow Oreo" that she named and watching her maneuver 4 Wheelers...tearing across the Tennessee hills and the New Mexico desert...and before the sundown, never failed to set the table with a thoughtfully planned meal. Always warm and welcoming...she never sent anyone away hungry!

Tootsie is survived by Leroy Humphries, her beloved spouse of 24 years, her daughter, Deana Case, her son, Jason Evans (Andrea) and Leroy's children, Jon Humphries (Debbie) and Rex Humphries (Matt). Between their blended families, Leroy and Tootsie were blessed with 7 grandchildren: Heather Fegan (Ande), Kendra Nguyen (Clifford), Charles Case, Isabella Evans, Michael Evans, Cameron Jack Humphries and Reiner Humphries, and 3 great-grandchildren: Ryan and Kiernan Fegan and Fenix Nguyen, in addition to many beloved family members and friends.

Tootsie was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Daisy Hay, and her older brother, Leroy Hay.

TOOTSIE will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. May her soul and the souls of the faithfully departed, by the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Grandma,

I'm going to miss you being Earth side with us. You are woven into the fabric of who we all are, and your love, warmth, adventurous nature and sense of humor will continue to live through all of us who had the privilege to love and know you.

I love you, Grandma Tootsie.

Tootsie and I are cousins and we were more like the sister we never had. We grew up together along with Leroy her brother. Daisy her mother was like my mother and treated me like her own daughter. My self and Little Mary Aragon also helped take care of Leroy and Daisy with Tootsie for so many years. We are family and family take care of each other and love each other everyday. I want to say that I will miss her dearly but am happy that she is resting in heaven with her family now and know one day we will meet again.

Aunt Tootaie was an amazing woman and the best person to just sit and talk. She would make me laugh. If you got her, Aunt Daisy and Uncle Leroy in the same room you best make sure you are ready for a party. My heart is not happy and sad at the same time. Happy she is at peace and once again back with her mother, father and beloved brother. Sad that I will never get to see her beautiful face again
