Dale Calhoun Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 7, 2024.
Dale Spann Calhoun, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2024 at the age of 78, at her home in Troy surrounded by her loving family.

Born on February 2, 1946, in Dothan, Dale was a graduate of Dothan High School and Auburn University. She was a resident of Troy for over fifty years. Dale devoted many years to the Alabama Department of Human Resources as a child welfare social worker, where she made a positive impact on many lives.

Dale was a member of Troy First Methodist Church for over fifty years, serving the Church in various capacities. She also served the community as a volunteer at the Johnson Center for the Arts.

An avid gardener, Dale enjoyed nurturing her plants and was a member of the Pike County Master Gardeners Association. One of Dale's favorite things, beginning in early childhood and continuing throughout her life, was spending time with her family in Seagrove Beach at the family cottage where many lasting memories were made.

Above all, Dale's greatest joy came from her beloved children and nine grandchildren. They were the center of her world and the source of her endless pride.

Dale was preceded in death by her parents, Marcellus Steadman Spann II and Esther Daffin Spann, and her sister, Susan. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Dickie, whose devotion to her was unwavering, her children, Caroline (James) Pittman, Anne (Frank) Leyden, and Richard (Brittney) Calhoun, and her grandchildren, Kate, Susan, Caroline, Lucy, Parker, Jim, Libby, Eloise, and Fletcher.

A visitation will be held on October 9, 2024, from 3:00 to 4:30 P.M. at Troy First Methodist Church. A graveside funeral service will be held at Memory Hills Cemetery in Dothan on October 10, 2024, at 10:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
