Dale Geiss Obituary

Dale Michael Geiss
PEORIA - Dale Michael Geiss, MD, Teacher, Mentor, Physician and Friend, passed away on Friday, June 11, 2021.
It was a bitterly cold and snowy spring day in Mandan, North Dakota. Lawrence and Clara Geiss were on their way to the hospital to deliver their second son, Dale. But Dale couldn't wait. As the family story goes, he was born on the front seat of a model T Ford.
Life was never easy for the Geiss family. Mom and dad each came from farm families of eleven children. They set out to farm for themselves, but drought stole that dream. In a home-built trailer (not an RV!) they headed for Fargo, camping along the river bank. After finding jobs, they bought a bare bones house. No running water, no toilet, no bath. Dale and his brother had to lug buckets down the street to buy water from a neighbor.
Dale proved to be an excellent student and was chosen to enter the Catholic seminary at the age of 14. At St John's, he finished high school and two years of college.
Fast forward: A degree from the North Dakota State University, then graduate work in Neuropsychology. To support his family, he sold smoke detectors door to door, with many slammed in his face.
Medical school became the new mission, but it required courses at three different Chicago universities to earn the right credits. He received his MD from Baylor University in Texas, and thought he'd return home and simply become a country doctor. Instead, he completed surgical residencies in California, Wisconsin and Toronto. It took eight grueling years, but he became proficient in both adult and pediatric cardiac surgery. Settling in Peoria, Illinois, he soon established a reputation for superior skills and immense compassion. He founded the Children's Heart Institute in 1980; until then little patients were sent to Chicago or St Louis. Many "firsts" were accomplished, such as pediatric mitral valve repair and the Norwood procedure. Patients and their families were grateful to find such lifesaving procedures close to home.
Dale spent most of his surgical career at OSF St. Francis in Peoria. Later, he helped revive struggling programs in the Quad Cities and Champaign Urbana. Ultimately he would complete 12,000 surgeries over his lifetime. After a cancer diagnosis in 2018, he continued working through radiation, chemotherapy and several surgeries. The end came just after midnight on June 11. He was comforted by his wife, Pam; his daughter, Kristin; and Angie Brown, his devoted nurse.
What did he do for enjoyment? Coworkers claim he could make it fun to be in the OR. If he could get away, he'd fly his twin engine Aerostar, a complex and difficult plane to master. He loved watching sports, football especially. And caring for stray cats, who seemed to know where to turn for love, warmth and vet care.
His family includes Pam, Kristin and Pam's daughter, Amy. Kristin is married to Michael Curran and has four grown children and three grandkids. Amy and her husband, Bill, have twin teenage boys.
His medical family includes hundreds of doctors and nurses he helped to become superior professionals. There has been an outpouring for love from so many who knew him as a caring compassionate, but demanding, physician who expected, and received, the best from everyone. And most importantly, for his patients.
Donations may be directed to the Dale Michael Geiss Cardiac Surgery Educational Foundation, 1624 NE Glen Oak Avenue, Peoria, IL 61603.
A funeral mass is planned for family only. A celebration of life will take place later this summer.

I was a surgical rep for a robotics company and worked with Dr. Geiss many years ago. I am very saddened to hear of his passing as I have thought of him often over the years. He was incredibly impressive - his surgical skill was unmatched! He was very intimidating to many people but he was always kind to me. I even got to enjoy a flight in his plane to an out of state hospital for some research/training. It was wonderful, experiencing his love of flying with him and having the chance to visit with him on a more personal level. His passing is a great loss but his legacy will live on. He will always be missed.

I still think about Dr. Geiss and tell stories about him all the time. I was a travel nurse for years after I left OSFSFMC and people all over the country loved hearing about him. Dr. Geiss was the most amazing cardiovascular surgeon. He earned his place in heaven. Rest easy, doc. You will never be forgotten.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Geiss' death. He saved my life by doing a Mitral Valve repair on me in 2015. Everyone else said it could not be done, including Mayo and Cleveland clinic. He told me not to worry, he did it many times and told me exactly what he was going to do and what he actually did.
When I came to around 2 AM after 8 hours of surgery plus recovery time, there he was still in his scrubs watching over me. He told me everything was fine, he sent my family back to the hotel to rest and I should go back to sleep.
I sent him a thank you card every year on October 6 and was never sure he got it but hope he did.
Great loss to his family, his patients and the medical profession. Wonderful and compassionate man.
May he find peace and rest with God.

I am sorry to hear we have lost Dr. Geiss. I am a cardiac anesthesiologist who did many open heart surgeries alongside him in the Quad Cities. I left there before he did but kept in touch with him and stopped multiple times at the hospital to see him on weekends when I was back in Iowa to visit. We had birthdays just a few days apart and more than once shared a cake together in the ICU lounge. I remember his beautiful voice singing in the operating room while we would work. And I remember doing cases with him nonstop. He never slowed down. His PA Wayne and I would playfully spar and when you thought Dale wasn't paying attention you would see him quietly laughing behind his mask. The last time I was in Iowa was in late April and I heard he was struggling with his cancer recurring. I called him and had a great conversation. He talked about working together again. I'm so glad we could talk one more time. The world has lost a great man.

Dale Geiss Family,
I am Dale's 1st cousin via his mom and my mom being sisters. Dale and his family would come to visit us on our farm in St. Anthony, ND and we would have a grand time. He would always give me a horsey ride on his back. I called Dale several years ago to discuss my sister's declining health and he was in the operating room. Even though he was busy his nurse put me through to him. We had a nice conversation which was fruitful. Dale was a down to earth man and never made me feel he was too important to speak with me. I learned a short while ago that he had cancer but thought I had some time to call him only to find out that he passed. I will always regret that I did not make that call when I first learned he was sick. Rest in peace Dale; you were an amazing person and a talented doctor from what I gather from your memorial messages. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I´m so sorry to hear of Dr. Geiss´s passing. He performed open heart surgery on me 9 years ago. After tests at St. Francis I was told I needed to have my aortic valve replaced and they would set me up with the best possible surgeon for the job. Unfortunately he was in surgery at Methodist at the time but they would send him in as soon as they could. Less than an hour later in walked this nice fellow who calmly explained what he was going to do and reassured us that he had done this same surgery so many times and there was no need to worry. Due to scheduling conflicts I had to wait at home a couple weeks but once the day came he was so reassuring before surgery and his bedside manner during my time in the hospital afterwards was wonderful. I also saw him outside my window at all hours checking on me. A few months later my son found out he needed the same surgery and a doctor was recommended to him but my daughters suggested he talk with Dr. Geiss instead. He readily agreed to do the surgery and it was a great success. My family was so thankful for Dr. Geiss´s expertise not once but twice.
He was a wonderful man and my condolences go out to all his family and friends.

There was no other Doctor that gave so much for his patients and their families. He wanted the best for his patients. If he found a nurse not being attentive to his new post op patient he didn’t want them caring for his patients. He made us all better nurses, he taught us all so much. Because of his high standards we raised ours. Our nursing careers would not have been as memorable and rewarding if Dale Geiss had not come to Peoria. We were blessed to work with him.

I worked in his office many years ago. He scared me at first (ha!) but it became obvious fairly quickly that he was a brilliant, kind and compassionate man. He taught me so much. He cared about his patients like they were family. My prayers are with you.

Dr. Geiss performed two surgeries on our daughter, Laurie Thomas vander Noordaa. He was a very compassionate and successful surgeon and Dave and I are blessed to have known him as both a friend and cardiac surgeon. After performing his last surgery on Laurie she was too weak from three previous surgeries that she left us for heaven at age 25. Dale was seen at the desk outside ICU sobbing with grief over Laurie´s passing. I imagine he greeted her as he entered his forever home in heaven.
Laurie was one of the first children featured for the Children´s Miracle Network in Peoria, IL.

Sending my condolences to Dr. Geiss´s family and friends. In my years as a nurse, I saw Dr. Geiss rejoice with patients and I saw him grief when a patient passed away. Used to tease him that "he was a steel coated marshmallow" and we would laugh together, the Dr. Geiss you didn't see often. His compassion for his patients was soft and tender. Dr. Geiss had high expectations for his patients care and he demanded it from staff. Peoria was blessed with a gifted surgeon, and he is missed.

Deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Dr. Geiss. I was blessed to have had him as my son's doctor starting in 1996. When Wade was born, he weighed just three pounds. I wasn't sure he was even alive. Dr. Geiss had a plan and when questioned, he said he could do the surgery on a rat! Within days, Wade was able to come home! His confidence, knowledge and skill, along with his ability to work with the "team" of doctors kept Wade alive. He was straight forward and direct with his plan of action and his strategy paid off and we were able to enjoy Wade until he passed in 1998. Dr. Geiss told me to make an appointment to come and see him in six weeks and NOT cancel it! He sat with me in a private office and calmly explained what happened. I will never forget his compassion that day and am so glad that I didn't cancel it. He had lots of patients that needed him, yet he was taking the time to make sure that I was going to be okay, even though he was sad too. If anybody deserved a ticket to Heaven, it was Dr. Geiss! What an amazing man and doctor!

Dr. Geiss performed heart surgery in the late 90's on a friend of mine who was like a father to me. His name was Hugh Griffin. Hugh was around 80 at the timeand had multiple previous heart surgeries by other Dr.s. Hugh's heart was in desperate need of another repair and this time none of the previous MD's would take a chance on him. Hugh went to see DR. Geiss who told him I think I can help you. Long story short. Dr. Geiss did help him and Hugh lived about nine more years after his surgery! Dr. Geiss gave those of us who loved this wonderful man many more years together. We all thank Dr. Geiss for the many many gifts of extra years with our loved ones!

Sending my condolences to Dr. Geiss’s family and friends. My family are part of those grateful people you spoke so eloquently of. He worked a miracle on my Mom’s heart years ago. I will never forget, Mom had a do not resuscitate in her file. He knew just how to get through to my Mom and with a bit tongue and cheek said, “Lucy, I’m not doing all this miracle work only for you to have a DNR!” Mom rescinded the DNR and because of Dr Geiss, we had 11 more years with her. RIP Dr Geiss.

My first memory of Dr. Geiss was when I was a brand new nurse on the pediatric floor. I was standing at the desk charting with lots of other nurses and techs around me. I looked up and all of a sudden everybody was gone! Just like they had vanished! As I looked around I saw a man in scrubs walking onto the pediatric floor and as he walked by me he gave me orders as to what supplies he wanted in a certain room. I learned afterwards he was Dr. Geiss. It really was quite comical that everyone exited stage left when they saw or heard him coming! I found him to be a wonderful Doctor and respected him immensely. He knew what he wanted for his patients and how he wanted them to be cared for! I am very sad about his passing. He was one of a kind.

So sorry that the world has lost such a gifted surgeon who was able to use his God-given talents in Peoria! Our son benefited from his skills twice as a boy! Thank you, Dr. Geiss! Our sympathies to the family and friends who loved him.

My name is Jeremy Fritz. I was a patient of Dr. Geiss, He performed my open heart surgery. My surgery anniversary was on 6.16, And it was 6.16.87 when I had my open heart surgery, Until I was able to return home on July 3rd. This is a complete shock to me. He was a super nice man. OSF had hired a wonderful cardiologist, As Geiss, Bash, Albers, Shaw, And their team worked around the clock to spare my life. My surgery was consisted of coarctation of aorta, And Aortopulmonary window. Instead of the aorta being crossed. It was apart like a football post. GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!!
