Dale Warren Sklar

August 7, 1963 - October 26, 2024 Morro Bay

Born in Detroit to Beverly and Charles Stephen Sklar, Dale was the beloved youngest son of three brothers.

Dale was a talented athlete who excelled at almost every sport and game. His true love in sports was basketball, but he went the furthest with baseball, starring as a centerfielder for the University of Michigan Wolverines for 2 seasons. He often told friends, "I didn't choose baseball, baseball chose me."

Among his many athletic accomplishments, Dale was proudest of winning the Big Ten Championship with the Wolverines in '83 and playing in the College World Series that year. In recognition of his stellar play, he was also named to the all-tournament team (which included Barry Bonds!).

The true and most enduring loves of Dale's life were his daughters Emily (30) and Sophia Sklar (25). He loved coaching both girls in multiple sports. He especially enjoyed coaching Sophia in basketball and helping her shoot as a lefty. He later made several trips to visit her in college in Chicago, one of his favorite cities. He also loved watching Emily thrive playing volleyball in college and professionally overseas. He was so proud to have at least one daughter living out his sports legacy.

Dale cherished his adopted "home" state of California, and could often be found on hikes or just sitting on a bench watching the ocean. Another perk of being in California was his proximity to wine country where he enjoyed wine tasting with family and friends. He could also be found drinking an IPA at a sports bar with friends rooting on his favorite teams.

Dale is survived by his daughters Emily and Sophia, mother Beverly, brothers Phillip (Pamela) and Michael, niece Sarah, and nephew Sam. He was predeceased by his father Stephen and nephew Shaun.

Friends and family are invited to Dale's Celebration of Life/Liturgy of the Word on Saturday, February 8th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Church in Los Altos, California. A reception will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Heart Association or Melanoma Research Foundation.
