Dale Weitz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 9, 2025.
Dale Weitz, 73, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2025, following complications from a stroke, which he faced with his family by his side. Born and raised in Grafton, Wisconsin, Dale called Plover, Wisconsin, his home for the last 30 years while working for more than two decades as an elementary-school reading teacher.

Dale lived life by his own rules and pursued his chosen passions with gusto: from trading in his sports car for a custom van and moving with it to California in the early 1970s, to sleeping on the living-room floor for weeks to look over the family's rambunctious Border Collie puppy, Comet. He returned to school after many years in the workforce and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from UW-Stevens Point in the late 1980s. On any given night, he could be found counting points in a game of cribbage, cheering on (and just as often critiquing) the Packers and Brewers, or reading one of his weekly novels. On Sundays, he rarely missed an IndyCar race. After retiring from teaching in 2013, he found a second dream job mowing the grass at Wisconsin River Golf Club.

Dale remained unbowed following an initial stroke in 2016 and a more recent lung-cancer diagnosis. Although he reluctantly gave up his days of hitting balls at the driving range and tooling around Stevens Point in his Subaru WRX, he remained as active as ever and never lost his carefree spirit. His family was blessed to have him in their lives for another decade.

Dale was preceded in passing by his daughter, Catharine, his parents, LeRoy and Margene, and his brother, Lee. He is survived by his wife, Linda, his sons, Evan and Eric, and his sister, Wendy. He is also survived by the countless students he taught over the years, and every person lucky enough to have met him and shared in a joke or conversation.

A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. Donations in Dale's honor can be made to Blood Cancer United, formerly known as the Leukemia Society of America.

A beloved husband, father, brother, and uncle, Dale will be dearly missed.
