Dale Welin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 22, 2025.
Dale King Welin, previously of Discovery Bay, California, died on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at age 87. He is now reunited with his parents, Glenn and Jean Welin, and his beloved brother Dean.

Dale was born on June 29, 1937, in Long Beach, California. He and his younger brother Dean maintained a close friendship throughout their lives, born nineteen months apart. Dale was very involved in the Boy Scouts, where he learned the values of hard work and perseverance - qualities he carried on throughout his life. He completed all of his schooling in Long Beach and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1955. From there, he went on to study business at the University of California-Long Beach, where he also played on the golf team. He graduated in 1959.

Dale was an active member of East Side Christian Church, where he met the love his life and future wife, Sonja, in 1958. On October 14, 1960, Dale and Sonja married and began their life together. They went on to have three beautiful children, Ron, Dennis and Lisa, who always made them proud. As a young man, Dale also proudly served in the USMC Reserves as a Platoon Honorman for five years and achieved Expert Marksmanship. He was honorably discharged in 1965 as a Sergeant. Early in his career Dale worked for Lever Brothers in the traffic department. Over the years, promotions led to six corporate moves that relocated the Welin family across the country. Eventually, after many years of dedication, Dale retired as a General Manager from Dry Storage Corporation in July, 1998.

Dale enjoyed nearly 30 wonderful years of work and retirement in Discovery Bay, California. He and Sonja belonged to Discovery Bay Country Club and were avid, passionate golfers. Dale won many golf awards and made nine holes-in-one throughout his golf career. He and Sonja traveled and golfed across the world, making wonderful memories together. In addition to golf, Dale loved gardening, walking, doing Sudoku puzzles, attending church, and being Sonja's trusty handyman. He especially treasured spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who he loved dearly.

Dale was a steadfast pillar of support in the lives of his loved ones. He touched countless family members, friends, colleagues, neighbors and acquaintances with his work ethic, kindness and integrity. Despite his serious exterior, Dale had a soft, warm and playful side that will be remembered by all who knew him.

Dale and Sonja had a loving and remarkable partnership throughout nearly 65 years of marriage. They accompanied and took care of each other through every phase of life, unwavering in their devotion. Dale is survived by his wife Sonja, his children Ron (Katie), Dennis (Julie), Lisa (Keith), his grandchildren Dan (Tracy), Emily (Curtis), Ellen, Allison, Amy, Michael, Brendan, and Sam, as well as three great-grandchildren, Nora, James and Elizabeth.

A Celebration of Life will be held on April 5, 2025, 11:00 am, at Delta Community Presbyterian Church in Discovery Bay, CA. Fellowship to follow.

Dale Welin was a man of integrity and honor. He was as honest as the day was long. He was a loving husband. father and grandfather. He was my friend and coworker, a man that I have known for over 35 years. I will miss your sense of humor and your candor.
May you rest in Peace, my friend!

I was about 11 when my Aunt Sonja married the love of her life, Dale Welin. Their wedding was one of my most memorable moments, like a fairytale. The Princess was marrying her Prince. They were the most beautiful couple and I knew that love would last forever. It has. They raised a wonder family, Ron, Dennis and Lisa. Their children and spouses, grandchildren and spouses and great grandchildren have been blessed with the love from Dale and Sonja. I have been honored to have you for my Uncle and Aunt, you are loved by so many.
