The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 to 8 PM. Damon Breland Lieb was born April 10, 1915 in Anson, TX to the home of Emma (Breland) and Herman "H. R." Lieb and died peacefully at his home on August 26, 2014, the day before what would have been his 75th wedding anniversary.
Damon grew up in Jones County, and on August. 27, 1939, in Spur, TX he was married to Nina Ford. The family moved to Roosevelt County in 1943 and settled on a a farm in the Red Lake community near Elida.
Damon farmed there until 1972, when he retired and moved to Portales. Even though he was officially retired, D. B. continued to raise cattle at Lingo and help his sons with the farms. The last time Mr. Lieb drove the combine he was 90 years old. Damon was a faithful Christian, and a member of the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ. You could likely count on your hands the number of times he missed attending Sunday services. Mr. Lieb began serving as a deacon for the Fourth Street congregation in Portales in 1953. He became an elder in1956, and served in that capacity until 1980 when the Second Street and Fourth Street congregations merged to form the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ. At that time he again became a deacon, and served until 1992. During his years of service, both the New Mexico Christian Children's Home and the Church of Christ Student Center were founded. He always enjoyed helping with the Sunday chicken fries and other congregational activities. His two guiding principles were to love God and work hard. D. B. exemplified living a quiet life that honored his faith. In addition to his work in the church, Damon served on the Soil Conservation Board, and was a supporter of the Roosevelt County Fair. He encouraged his children and grandchildren to show animals, and that has continued on as a family tradition even to his great-grandchildren. Damon was always ready to be involved in anything along with his sons. He loved to hunt and fish, and be with his family. Damon was always fun-loving. A grandson remembered him challenging his grandchildren to a "rock fight" on a camping trip when he was 60 plus years old.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Sharon Lieb of Portales and Randy and Diane Lieb of Dora; six grandchildren, Todd Lieb, Aaron (Heather) Lieb, Leslie (Garland) Creighton, Crissa (Rodney) Carter, Tammy (Mark) Bales and Jody (Jeremy) Dennis; 14 great-grandchildren, Lathan Lieb, Kynzie and Kasyn Creighton, Tyler and Macy Bales, Reagan, Walker, and Taylor Dennis, Kye, Cass and Canon Carter and Jed, Alyssa and Jasmine Lieb; and by Irene Montano, who has been his faithful caretaker for the past eight years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, William and Alfred Lieb, two sisters, Allene Jackson and Sadie Smith, a grandson, BradLieb who died in 2000, a son, Dennis Lieb who died in 1988 and by Nina(Ford) Lieb, who died June 13, 2002 after more than 62 1/2 years of marriage.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary of Portales. 575-356-4455, wheelermortuary.net

Thinking of you! We will be unable to attend the funeral of your father. We have certainly enjoyed and cherished the friendships of Johnny and Sharon and Randy and Diane and their families over the years.

Me and my brother Jack Manis worked for Damon lieb by driving a tractor and plowing the fields on his farms. I remember the delicious meals that Nina served and looking forward to Dinner each day that we worked in the fields. Johnny and Randy were just young boys and Jack and I were in High School at the time. I still remember the MM Tractors and I froze one of my hands in Butane while refueling my tractor one of those days. Damon and Nina were good people and we enjoyed the boys as well. God bless this family.

To the family of Damon Lieb, my prayers are for the family. Mr Lieb was a very kind , and honest man. We my dad farmed his farm south of Portales for many years. We had a very good relationship with him, and his family, even years later when both he ,and my dad had quit farming. I and my sister will miss him very much. Again my prayers are for the family.
