Dan Nolan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 5, 2007.
NOLAN, Dan Dan Nolan, 78, of Windsor, died at St. Francis Hospital on Sunday (June 3, 2007) surrounded by his family as his favorite song, "Blacksod Bay," played on his iPod. Dan was born on January 12, 1929 in New Quay, County Clare, Ireland, the son of late John and Bridget (Maloney) Nolan. He emigrated to the United States in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict under the Truman administration and was honorably discharged in 1952. Dan proudly served on the Hartford Fire Department for 41 years and retired as Deputy Chief in 1994. Dan was a passionate supporter of Irish Northern Aid, a member of the Retired Firefighters' Association, the Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association, the Police and Fireman's Association, the Fireman's Benevolent Society, the Hartford Firefighters' Protective Association, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, a charter member of the Hartford Firefighters' Emerald Society, and a life member of The Old Guard Association. Dan enjoyed fishing, gardening, and researching and disseminating Irish news on his computer. He loved Irish music, Irish history, and watching Irish football and hurling matches. He was one of the founders of Hartford's St. Patrick's Day Parade. He made dozens of trips back and forth to his home country of Ireland over the years. Dan leaves his loving family, his wife of 50 years, Nora (Canny) Nolan; his children, Noreen Nolan of Windsor; Margaret Nolan-Thibault, her husband Alan, and children Liz and Will of Colchester; Claire Nolan of Windsor; Daniel Nolan of Windsor, currently serving in the U.S. Army National Guard in Baghdad, Iraq; John Nolan, his wife Sue, and children Ashley, Melissa, and John of Windsor; and Patsy D'Agata, her husband Tom, and children Erin, Angela, and Olivia of North Granby. He also leaves his sisters, Maureen Nolan of Washington, D.C. and Margaret Cunnane of Bloomfield, and a brother James and his wife Nora of County Clare, Ireland. He leaves his sisters-in-law Mary Kelly of Dunmore, County Galway, Ireland; Dell O'Meara and her husband John of Winsted; Margaret Whitman and her husband Robert of Enfield; a brother-in-law Pat and his wife Mary of Lancashire, England, and many dear nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to offer sincere thanks to the staff of St. Francis Hospital, who provided compassionate care and support throughout Dan's illness. Funeral Services will be held Friday, June 8, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Church, 160 Main St., Hartford (everyone is requested to go directly to church). Burial with full military honors will follow at Veterans Memorial Cemetery, East St, Windsor. Friends may call at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield, Thursday, June 7 from 3-7 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to St. Peter's Church Restoration Fund, c/o Father Galasso, 160 Main St., Hartford, CT 06106.

Happy 79th Birthday in Heaven, Dad!
I miss you so much! I always feel that you are with me in spirit and I think about you every day. I want you to know that I appreciate everything that you have done for me. You always looked after your family. I hope that you saw your funeral. A few people that attended told me that they never saw anything like it. My personal favorite was from a firefighter that did not know that I was standing behind him. He said "I don't know where he went but he sure went in style." I know that you would get a laugh out of that one. I know that you are at peace now and that is the important thing.
Love Always,

Noreen

We are very sorry to hear about such a fine man's passing. I found Dan to be
a very good man & leader when I was a Hartford Fireman in the 1960's. Very devoted to his family, who we would like to extend our condolences to now. He will be sorely missed.

I just heard the news today and I was deeply saddened by Dan's passing. Although I have not seen Dan much over the past few years, he was always like a surrogate uncle to me and my sisters. I always enjoyed his hearty laugh and that "killer" handshake. I am so sorry that I was unable to attend the services, but I simply did not know. My deepest sympathy and condolences to the entire Nolan family. May he rest safely in God's hands.

To Patsy and the Nolan family:

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy and my thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time and the days ahead. I did not know your father (and husband) but I know he must have been such an amazing man. He and your mother raised such wonderful and exceptional children and when I listened to Danny speak of each one of you and your relationship with your father, I realized what a loving and blessed family you have. Especially when I looked at the pictures of your father (and husband) with his grandchildren and saw the love on his face. May your memories bring you comfort and bring to mind many happy thoughts.

I met Dan years before I joined the Fire Service, back when I worked for Lenny Lagosh. Lenny would bring me to Fire Department functions and I said to my self that this man they refer to as big Dan is a tough guy especially when he almost tore my arm out of it's socket arm wrestling. But we got to Know each other and I quickly learned to respect him. Just like anyone in the armed forces you never forget your drill instructors, I will never forget Big Dan. I am sorry I missed the wake , I was away on Active Duty Training. My thoughts are with your family.

Danny & Family

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

God looked around his garden and found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best.
He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids and whispered "Peace be thine".
It broke our hearts to lose you but you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home.

Rest in peace Mr Nolan.

It was only a few weeks ago that "Big Dan" called me at District 1's office. He greeted me with his very distinct way of saying hello to an Italian Deputy Chief. We talked and laughed for quite awhile. It took me back to times years ago when we did the same in the firehouse. He was a mentor and a leader. It was my honor to have worked for him. I will miss him dearly.

Dan, John and the entire Nolan Family

I wish to extend my deepest sympathies on the loss of Chief Nolan.
Dan was a man who maintained the highest degree of intregrity and honor and I'm a better man for knowing him.
I have always admired him for his standards and work ethic.
I remember, at Chief Bacon's funural [Rocky Hill FD] Dan took control of the FD membership and had them stand , line-up, salute etc at the appropriate times. Not all the guys knew who he was, but it was clearly understood that this man was a leader and he was to be followed.
I will always treasure the memories of the last times that I saw Dan, saturday the 17th at the club and the 18th at the the friendly sons dinner.
May the support from the many, many attendees at the wake and funeral confort you in this time of loss.

Dan and family, many thoughts of the past come to mind, you and your family were blessed with a one of a kind man. He taught alot of us in the fire service respect and dignity of the job. When I was in Wilson FD at a early age we had a LODD, and your dad put it all together. He lined us up like soldiers and made us all stand tall. The good times after the St. Pat's Parades at the Irish Club were the best. Dan, may God watch over you and your family during these difficult times. He is very proud of what you turned out to be. Be safe my brother. Sincerly, Don,and Nancy Peck and family. (Hamilton Sundstrand Emergency Services)

To the Nolan Family,

I am so sorry for your loss. My memories of your Father were back in the early days when we first moved to the US from Ireland. I was so young but always remembered Dan having to duck in every room of our house in South Windsor because he was so tall and our ceilings were so low. I also remembered him making me laugh every chance he got.

Death is nothing at all.
It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Everything remains as it was.
The old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no sorrow in your tone.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effort
Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was.
There is unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.
All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before.
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting, when we meet again.
