Dana Hayes Obituary
Born in Clayton, W.Va., she was number 11 of 12 children. She had resided on the Peninsula since 1952 and retired from the Newport News Public School System in 1995, with 26 years of service. She was a very active member of North Riverside Baptist Church.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, Buck Hayes; her four children, Rodney Hayes and his wife, Sandra of Newport News, Deborah Weiler and her husband, Al of Sanford, N.C., Steven Hayes and his wife, Joy of Yorktown, and Nancy Burleson and her husband, Rahn of Newport News; her brother, Ranny Garten and his wife, Pinky of Kansas City, Mo.; her sisters, Wilda Holiday of Quinton, Va., and Kitty Sue Gill of Augusta, Ga.; her eleven grandchildren, Eric, Ruedi, Stephanie, Ben, Lily, Nolan, Brandon, Sam, Drew, Matthew and Joan; and her great-grandchild, Ellyse.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at Weymouth Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at North Riverside Baptist Church at 11: 30 a.m., by the Rev. James George. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to North Riverside Baptist Church, 311 Selden Rd., NN, VA 23606.

I was sadden by the news that Aunt Dana passed away. I will always remember the way she smiled! I still have the children's Bible that she bought for my oldest son, and will tell him about her when we read it. My thoughts and prayers are with her beloved husband Buck and her devoting children and grandchildren. I hope she is giving MawMaw~Pauline a great big hug for me~

I was so sorry to hear of Dana's passing. My grandmother, Pauline Miller, was Dana's sister. Pauline passed away in 1999, and I hope that they are together in peace. My thoughts are with you and your family in this time of grief.

Genelle and I were saddened as we heard news of Dana's passing this weekend. Dana was one of God's special blessings to us during our time in Virginia. Her compassionate spirit and gentle smile were merely external evidence of her dedication to be the “salt” and “light” of the earth. Always so positive and showing love to our family and everyone she knew or met. I never knew "Miz Hayes" to be unwelcoming or unkind to anyone. I know you all are proud to call her wife, mom, grandmother and aunt. My family was proud to call her friend.

Dear Uncle Buck & Family,
We are so sorry to hear about Aunt Dana, she really meant a lot to us. She was such a wonderful woman who loved looking over her family to make sure everyone was fine and taken care of and now atleast she will be able to watch over everyone and protect them with her loving arms from heaven. Please know that we will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers. I'm so glad I got to talk to Aunt Dana one last time before God called her home, but I'm of course sad that I couldn't have been up there in person recently. Dear Buck and Family,
Just a simple gesture of love sent your way as you say your farewell's, (but remember, it's only for a short while). God is bringing his precious ones home as their mansion is prepared and one day very soon, HE will have all of ours complete and we'll all go home. and Aunt Dana will be waiting, with Granny Morris, Mommy and Daddy Garten and all our beloved ones that have gone on before. Praise GOD!!! What a wonderful homecoming that will be.
