Daniel Carter "Dan" Allensworth UPPER Dr. Daniel Carter Allensworth III, 95, of Galveston, Texas, died on February 18, 2025, in Rockwall, Texas, at the home of his daughter, where he spent the last months of his life.
Dan was born in San Antonio, Texas, on November 11, 1929, the first son of Daniel Carter Allensworth, Jr., and Elizabeth James Allensworth. After graduating from Alamo Heights High School in 1947, he attended Rice Institute, now Rice University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1951. He was accepted to the School of Medicine at the University of Texas in Galveston where he was in the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity. Graduating in 1955, Dan went to Detroit, Michigan for a rotating internship at the Detroit Receiving Hospital.
After enlisting in the United States Navy Reserves, Dan served on active duty for two years at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. He was the Medical Officer of the destroyer tender USN Bryce Canyon, AD36, in the Pacific Command.
Following his discharge from the Navy Reserves, Dan returned to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston as a resident in Internal Medicine. It was at this time that he met Jane Belden, who had come to work at UTMB. They married in 1962, making their home in Galveston.
Dan often talked of his "time in Boston" where he had a National Institutes of Health Fellowship in Cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital. One additional Fellowship at the University of Ohio Hospitals in Columbus rounded out his education.
Returning to Galveston, Dan served on the Department of Internal Medicine faculty for thirty years, until his retirement in 1993. Students and colleagues alike appreciated him for his kind demeanor, and his diagnostic, teaching, and mentoring skills.
Outside of his professional achievements, Dan loved cooking, sailing, travel, photography, and Texas history. He shared these interests with his kids and grandkids, teaching all to cook and sail. Much of this teaching happened in Central Lake, Michigan, where he and Jane spent their summers, enjoying life-long friendships and visits from family.
Dan was an avid runner. He competed in races all over the country, but most notably, he was a 16-year legacy runner with the Houston Marathon, almost always winning in his age bracket. He ran his last marathon at age 81.
Unbeknownst to anyone but his close family, Dan was an amazing storyteller. To get his children to sleep at night, he would tell bedtime stories, a tradition he continued with his grandchildren. The unique tales crafted for each child are a treasure.
A man of deep moral conviction, honest, humble and kind - a true gentleman - Dr. Allensworth will be greatly missed.
Dan is survived by his children, David Allensworth (Debbie) and Sissie Donnell (Jeff), along with seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Belden Allensworth, brother James Hunter Allensworth of Arcata, California, and cousin, who was more like a sister, JoAnn Tolson of San Antonio, Texas.
A private graveside will be held at a later date.
