Daniel Begovich Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 10, 2010.
Daniel Matthew Begovich (Hillsborough, CA and Sun Valley, ID) Our beloved Dan died unexpectedly on January 7, 2010. He will be missed by friends and family from all chapters of his life, who treasured him as a kind man of sterling character. Daniel Begovich was born on January 14, 1957, in San Francisco, California, to Dan and Emma Begovich. He graduated from Mills High School and UC Berkeley where he played varsity basketball for the Golden Bears. He was named Most Valuable Player in 1977, and was awarded the Harold Belasco Gold Award in 1979. Dan was a president of Sigma Nu fraternity while at Cal. Dan's father was a varsity football player for Cal and played in two Rose Bowls for the Golden Bears. After college, Dan entered his father's real estate business, Danco Real Estate, and later took over the business. In 1987 Dan married the love of his life and his best friend, Mariann. Their three sons brought Dan extraordinary happiness. Joseph, Daniel, Neal and Mariann will miss him dearly. A great athlete, Dan thoroughly enjoyed skiing, golf, and basketball. He was an enthusiastic coach and friend to his sons and their friends. He was always a model of great sportsmanship and passion for the game. He also had a great love for music, particularly Jimmy Buffet, Bruce Springsteen, the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones. Dan was a den leader with the Boy Scouts of America for many years. He was a member of the Burlingame Country Club and was a faithful parishioner at St. Catherine of Siena in Burlingame for over 25 years. All who knew him will remember him for his kindness, compassion, integrity and generosity, and as a loyal and good friend. Dan was a devoted husband, father, son, son-in-law, and brother. He loved his family deeply and was always there to help any family member. He is survived by his wife, Mariann Byerwalter, his sons Joseph, Daniel and Neal, his mother, Emma, his sisters, Ann and Patrice, and his mother-in-law Mary and brother-in-law Robert. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on January 14th at 10:00 AM at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 1310 Bayswater Ave., Burlingame, CA. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery, San Mateo. All are invited to a Luncheon Reception at Burlingame Country Club, 80 New Place Road, Hillsborough, immediately following the Services. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Stanford Hospital and Clinics, 300 Pasteur Drive, Suite H3200, Stanford, CA 94305.

Dear Mariann, I am so deeply sorry to learn of Dan's passing earlier this year. Though I did not know him well, I learned from my time working with you that the two of you were a deeply committed and loving couple. I know that no amount of time will completely relieve you of your loss but I hope that the passage of time has begun to lessen the sadness of Dan's unexpected death for you and your children. With much love,

Dear Begovich Family
I am so sorry to hearabout Dan's passing I knew Dan at Cal . I was Casselli's girlfriend for a year at school when Dan and John were on the basketball team. We spent a lot of time with" Bego". Dan and I also were friends after the passing of Joe Roth. Joe and I were good buds as were Dan and Joe. I remember Dan kept in touch with Joe's parents as I did for several years after Joe's passing. Dan visited the Roth's several times in Idaho.. He would always call me to update me about their condition and his time with them. My thoughts and prayers are with you all and I certainly hope Dan has caught up with Joe in heaven. Dan was a great guy.

Dearest Mariann,
When I heard the news from my dad about Dan's sudden passing, it took my breath away. I did not know Dan well, but always witnessed from a distance and heard from both my mom and dad what a lovely man he was - they took such delight in seeing your beautiful family. I have always appreciated how warm and kind you and Dan have been w/ my parents. Please know how deeply sorry I am as our family keeps you, your sons and all of Dan's loved ones in our heartfelt prayers.

Dan and I ran against each other for President of the Sigma Nu house at Berkeley. Believe me - the better man won! I remember sitting with him wondering who would win the run off - and I am so glad Dan prevailed and became the man that he did. What a great guy - I am so sorry for the family's loss - this has come as quite a shocker. Dan - rest my friend - we all can only wish to be half the man that you had become.

Mariann, Joseph, Daniel and Neal-
Your tributes at the service on Thursday were beautiful. I know the days ahead will not be easy, but as Father Ryan talked about his mother who said God will take care of you. You have my deepest sympathy and many prayers for Dan and the four of you.

Mills High School basketball is where I learned from Dan the aspects of leadership, friendship and caring. The many memories from hoops, camping, fishing, basketball camp and general teenage foolishness are some of my strongest memories of Dan. I last saw Dan in 2004, at my own father's funeral, where Dan embraced me and gave me that same warm sense of comfort he did as a teenager. I will greatly miss Dan and will keep Dan and the entire family in my thoughts and prayers.

Bego - We will all miss you.

It's been at least 25 years since I've seen Dan. Growing up as Clay Bullwinkel's brother means that Dan and the Begovich family are part of the foundation of my life. Tho it's been a long long time, I have memories of times at Mills High with Clay and Dan and the guys as their littlest booster, Christmases and family dinners wondering if I would ever grow to be so tall!

My prayers go out to Mariann, Joseph, Daniel, Neal, and the Begovich family.

Dan, you will be missed but NEVER forgotten.

To the Begovich Family: it was a shock when I heard the news. I couldn't believe it at all. Memories of him came rolling in to my mind. I have known him since I start working at Danco, it has been almost 13 years now.

He always have a smile on him whenever he talked about you Marianne, Joseph, Daniel and Neal. He was a great guy to work with. He will be missed.

I was overwhelmed with the outpouring of love I felt yesterday at the service for Dan. Though I knew him only for a brief time, he certainly stood for all the things that I hold dear. The nick name "the Boy Scout" certainly fits. Trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent are the words of the Scout Law. This certainly described him. The Scouting family will continue to be there for you and the boys.

Mariann and family,

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Dan's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I grew up in Millbrae and Dan was at Mills High when I was at Serra. He was at Cal the same years I was there and we had a mutual friend in Dan Cullinan, Dan's fraternity brother at Sigma Nu. We both came from Cal families. My mom Beverly, my aunt and uncle as well as two of my siblings all went to Cal. Dan's dad, Dan senior was at Cal the same time my mom was there.

I knew also Dan from my Real Estate practice as I am with a Realtor Coldwell Banker here on the Peninsula. In fact Danco Realty was the location of my Dad's( Frank Duke ) and grandfather's ( Frank ) Real Estate office - LaMont Realty in the Westlake shopping center prior to Dan's dad openning his office at the same location - 10 Park Plaza Drive.

Dan always had a smile on his face and a kind thing to say. He will be missed...

To the family of Dan Begovich. We did not go to high school with Dan, nor did we play golf or go skiing with Dan. We are tenants at the Lincoln Circle Apts in Millbrae and Dan was our landlord. That being said, in that role we saw a compassionate, kind hearted, soft spoken man who always mentioned his children in any conversation we had. He always spoke of his boys. That is how I will remember Dan. I just saw him on January 5th, hard to believe. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.

To the Begovich Family - Dan was my first roommate in the Sigma Nu house. I can still remember the stereo blasting with Dan playing his air guitar, or Dan doing his ever-famous Jack Nicholson (Easy Rider) impressions. But more than that, I’ll always remember Dan’s passion and big heart. Dan’s infectious energy was felt by all of his fellow Sigma Nu’s and our experience wouldn’t have been the same without it. I’m grateful that I was able to share that time with him. We will all miss Dan deeply.

The summer of 1974 at Dunes Beach along the San Mateo County coast. For me, that is where Dan Begovich will always live. Young, tall, handsome and having the time of his young life.

Dan, we will miss you dearly.

Dear Joseph, Daniel, Neal and Mariann,
We are so glad Dan touched our lives, be it in his inviting smile, humorous tales of what kids really said in carpool each day, his juggling of activities up and down the Peninsula, standard-setting for Cub Scout campouts and father/son activities, ever-attentive outfield observation post at baseball games, positive reinforcement of sportsmanship and effort no matter how strong the athlete, caring devotion to you all and your achievements, presence at parent conferences, Opening Day activities, or dinners out. It seemed Dan was everywhere, helping so many do many things. You are lucky to have shared part of your lives with him. We wish your togetherness had lasted longer and hope his caring, coaching, coaxing, and compassion become parts of you forever. He valued your individuality so highly(returning to our shop several times one year to help each son build the exact Pinewood Derby car imagined). We know you'll make him proud in years to come -- we wish you every strength as you live with his loss.

May God watch over you in your time of sorrow, and may your memories of love comfort you.

Dear Begovich Family:

I was saddened to hear this news. Going way back to grade school, Dan and I were basketball rivals. The last time we faced each other on the courts I was playing for Crestmoor High. Dan was a fiece competitor and I looked forward to playing against him; all the while knowing that after the game, we could always great each other at half court with a handshake and congrats for a great game played. At at times, we would acknowledge a "great block" even if the referees would call a foul on either of us. Dan was someone I always admired and respected.

I guess there are no words that can take away your pain and sorrow. You have my sincerest sympathy and well wishes.

Our hearts are with you, and we look forward to being with you to share your grief and to share in the respect and affection so many feel for Dan. Love, Leslie, Dale and Jackson Chihuly

Dear Mariann,
Gene and I are heart sick for you and the boys. Life is a mysterious thing. Sometimes we are fortunate that we cannot see too far ahead.
I remember Dan as a soft-spoken gentle person who visibly enjoyed his family and took unspeakable pride in his little men.
When we lose someone so precious, it is the stories that keep him present. I have no doubt that there are many wonderful tales to tell the boys as they grow up. They had a terrific Dad... and they have a Mom with a loving and generous heart.
There is no way to express our sadness at your loss. We will keep you in our prayers. Gloria and Gene

I just heard this news and my sympathies and condolences to his family.

I was a Sigma Nu pledge brother of Dan's at Cal. I remember going to his house one day and meeting his Father and Mother. Both were very kind to me. Dan and his Mother had a good bond. His Father wanted him to play in the NBA as a forward. I remember Dan and his Mother smiling at each other as his Father talked about that. I remember thinking about the affection between Dan and his Mother and their understanding of his Father's pride in his son and desire to see him succeed.

We are saddened to have learned of Dan's passing. Having known Dan for the past 30 years from my early days in Daly City real estate we always managed to stay in touch discussing business, golf, or old cars. Laurie and I extend our heartfelt sympathy to Mariann and the boys and the entire Begovich family. Dan will be greatly missed.

I have know Dan for many years. our Real Estate paths would cross over and over for the past 20 or so years. I always enjoyed my conversations with Dan. I am extremely shocked and saddened by his departure.he called me recently about a neighbors property water over flow, because he could not get a hold of them and new they were my friends & clients; that's the Dan I will remember kind and thoughtful, always! My wife and I, send our heartfelt condolences to his entire family.
