Daniel Delisle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 10, 2025.
Daniel "Big Dan" Delisle, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away suddenly on July 7, 2025, at the age of 67. Splitting his time between Bradenton, Florida, and Newfield, Maine, Dan's vibrant spirit, big personality, and enormous heart made him an unforgettable presence wherever he went.

Born in Berlin, New Hampshire, Dan grew up in Portsmouth, graduating with the Portsmouth High School class of 1975. From a young age, he was known for his hard work and unyielding determination-a strong back matched only by an even stronger will. Throughout his career, Dan dedicated himself to being a highly skilled heavy equipment operator, working with the Portsmouth Water Department, Iafolla Construction, and as a proud member of the Operating Engineers Union, Local 4 (Boston), and Local 150 (Chicago).

Dan was larger than life in every way. He was the kind of person who made an impression on everyone he met. With a booming laugh, and a seemingly endless supply of stories and jokes, he became the heart and soul of every gathering. Dan cared deeply, laughed often, and always showed up for those he loved. Whether you called him Dan, Danny, Dad, Uncle Dan, Mr. Dan, or Big Dan, he was "the one" you called.

He had a passion for the outdoors and could often be found fishing, trap shooting, or golfing. A gifted woodworker, he poured his creativity and love into every one of his many projects, from custom cribbage boards and house signs to his unique "whacky creatures". Dan generously gifted these one-of-a-kind creations to those around him for the simple joy of making them smile. He also had a deep love for playing cards and gambling in general. It didn't matter if he was playing cribbage with family and friends or the slot machines at the casino, he seemed to always win. Dan's luck was, quite simply, uncanny-he was truly the luckiest man we knew.

Family was the cornerstone of Dan's life; he was never happier than the times he spent surrounded by loved ones-especially the younger generations, who were drawn to his playful spirit like the Pied Piper. He had an unmatched ability to bring people together, ensuring no gathering was complete without him at the center and often called or dropped by, at all hours, just to check in-or tell a story or two.

For over forty summers, Dan found solace and camaraderie with his beloved Sebago family in Maine. In recent years, he became an icon in his winter home at Lincoln Arms Community in Bradenton. An unofficial mayor who was always ready with a kind word, a hearty laugh, or a helping hand made him known and loved by all.

Dan faced years of health challenges with characteristic resilience, remaining fiercely independent and joyful. He lived life on his own terms and refused to let adversity dim his spirit or weigh down those around him. His strength, humor, and generosity were constants and will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Priscilla Delisle, his sister Dorothy, and his brothers David, Douglas, Dennis, and Dana. Dan is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Delisle; his son, Nathaniel (Tara) Delisle; his brothers Donald (Dolores) Delisle and Dale Delisle; extended family; and countless individuals lucky enough to have called him a friend.

Dan left this world doing what he loved most "playing in the dirt"-in a place that he absolutely cherished. He wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

A celebration of Dan's remarkable life will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025 in Portsmouth, NH. Further details will be shared with family and friends once further arrangements are made.

Big Dan's legacy endures in the love he gave and the lives he touched. He will be missed beyond measure and remembered always with laughter, love, and gratitude.

We had some great memories in high school. Your nickname was "farmer Dan." I remember you coming over to the Wrens Nest. My mom loved you. First boy I dated in high school. Your family was so nice to me. I remember your house on Peverly Hill Rd. I remember you scared the crap out of me when we went snowmobiling in your back woods. I held on tight that´s for sure so long ago. You were always a gentleman and now at home with the Lord.

Dan (The Man) as myself and Kevin Leonard called him. Brought us to our first Meredith Ice fishing derby, and many times after that.

Dan lived around the corner from us at Lincoln Arms. Whenever I needed something fixed or built, Dan would show up with his variety of solutions, sometimes helpful and at other times, "whacky". Every time I wandered to the workshop with a project, I often wondered if Dan was thinking, "Oh goodness, here comes Karen again." But that was never the case because Dan was always willing to assist. He also loved to take Andrew, our special needs son, for long rides on the golf cart. We will miss Dan´s bigger than life personality, and his gracious spirit. Patty, we send our love and prayers to you and your family.

Played softball for years with Dan. Sometimes with him sometimes opposing him. He hit a few out of the park off me. After years of pitching to him and trying to keep him from hitting a home run off me, when the league had a home run hitting contest, he asked me to pitch for him. Then, there I was trying to let him head home runs off me. Of all the pitchers in the league he chose me to pitch to him. This is just my best memory about him, other than just hanging around after games having a few beers. So Dan, hit one out of the park for us all up there. Then have a cold one. Mike 'Cappy' Capalare

Danny was such a friend to me and our family. My kids and grandkids just cherished the time he spent with them. Danny never ask me for anything in return but the key to the excavator because I didn't know what I was doing. That was a true statement and this last winter he could do wonders with it. He was generous in so many ways but it was him giving of his time that meant so much. We pray God would comfort Patty and Nate during this time of sorrow. I felt honored to have known him.
