I met Dan and his lovely wife, Sue, as he was entering the U.S. Army in 1969. Our discussions centered around Art and our common name when we weren't talking about what I, as his Sergeant, was making him do as well as the foolishness of an undeclared war. Dan suggested I go to Cranbrook when I mustered out (a mere matter of months), his alma mater. As things turned out I went to WSU, Detroit instead but something made me major in Printmaking. I have thought, kindly and with fondness over the years, of Dan and Sue but never made a re-connection. Now it is too late. Daniel touched me in a very positive way and I am just very sorry we never were able to meet up post-Army to share experiences. Rest in Peace, friend.

When I met Dan it was at the beginning of my creative career. The idea of calling myself a 'real' artist was something I only aspired to. Dan was a real artist; he lived and breathed, curiosity, fearlessness and passion. His ability to see uniqueness and beauty in the muddiest of lithographs inspired so many of his students to keep trying. With Dan I learned to look deeper, through the surface and beyond. I thought you'd live forever; and in our hearts you will.

Dan was my favorite professor from 1980 to 84, and I wasn't even a print major. Met up with him in Baltimore 20 years later, for drinks. Still the same. I will always have fond memories.

He taught me what drawing is: how to question what I do, how to sweat when I am working, how to respect my own sensitivity.

Dan was a great character and professor. He had my number while his student in lithography in 1974 and gave me a well deserved D, with an explanation , that even I couldn't protest. He later acknowledged that print making was not my thing and invited me to a few parties at the house. What great fun. He will never be forgotten and a smile crosses my face whenever I think of him. He was an influence in my artistic career and in my teaching one as well. You will be missed. my condolences to Noah and the family.

I remember seeing a ghost of one of your images on a huge litho stone at Cranbrook in the 80's. Thanks so much for your instruction and encouragement. Thinking fondly of our interaction in class. Love to you and your family.

Daniel will be dearly missed. He was such a character and his personality was out of this world. He had a great sense of humour. I am still smiling thinking about the way he served the drinks we had at his place when Josie graduated from Wayne. The funniest and most outrageous bowl ever. He will be missed by many. RIP Daniel. May we meet again.
My sincere condolences to his family and close friends.

Dan was an amazing mentor who pushed you when you didn't want to be pushed and made you do great things. I am sad to know that I will not get to speak with him again or hear his booming laugh. My thoughts are with his family.

I am sadly bewildered by Dan's passing, "we will never hear the passionate cry, of Senefelder's Crayon Black, the way Dan echoed it" Now we all know he was Bavarian in so many way!
Thanks Dan, for everything especially for teaching my son Kaz!

This is a great loss to the printmaking community. Dan was an imposing figure with a kind heart. I remember meeting him for the first time through my Profs at the time- Otis Tamasauskis and Erik Edson. Both students of his as well. He hosted the first get together for all the MFA's and I remember being shocked at his house but it was also gloriously liberating at the same time. He loved to shock you. Dan, you will be missed.

Deepest Condolences to Noah and family, and Josie who loved him and cared for him in his final years. He was a strange and wonderful artist and man, a fine teacher, and a good friend. Woke up yesterday thinking about him, way out here on PEI, not knowing of his passing. Something about some shifting light.... he taught me drawing as well as litho, and he comes to mind often. He will be missed, by many.

Noah and Family,
Dan's presence as a neighbor and friend will be greatly missed. His daily life of excellence and the expectation of the same from others made him a prized member of the Askin family. We all feel this way. The Askin Labor Day Picnic will not be the same .
Sincerely
