Has it really been 7 years since you passed?! I still see the tribute sign in front of Dodge School in my mind. You are quite a legend in the minds of Twinsburg graduates, yet the stories shared here provided depth to our images of who you truly were. You had a big impact on the lives of many kids within our school district, and are a part of many memories. Thank you for guiding us. You taught us a lot more than you realized. Those who knew you were truly blessed, in Twinsburg and in every part of your life. You are remembered well.

Dan was my mentor, my friend, my constant help when I first started teaching at Chamberlin High School in 1965, and for many years thereafter. I was so blessed to have him in my corner. Lots of good memories, fun memories.

As with many truly fine human beings, there are a host of stories about them that few people know or remember. My mother, who lived in Peninsula, was a crippled widow who could not drive. In the early 1960's she was trying to put her life back together as a teacher and was accepted by Twinsburg schools as a high school language teacher. However, she had no transportation. In stepped Dan Emmett, who lived up the road and who provided transportation for my mother every day, to and from school, for nineteen years. In those nineteen years, Mom missed not one day of school for lack of a ride. That was due primarily to Dan Emmett who generously and kindly provided a daily ride without compensation except the friendship and enduring gratitude of my mother. Mom has passed away now, but her four sons will forever remember the generosity of that wonderful person.

It was nearly forty years ago when I first met Dan. Having bought a chunk of land to build upon I was directed to Dan to have some brush hogging done on my property. Immediately he became my go to guy having invaluable knowledge and the willingness to share. It wasn't long before I would show up with each new addition of my three babies to introduce to him. He would chuckle with delight at their antics. For about three summers he grew Strawberries. I along with my three would show up and pick strawberries for making jam. We would return from the field with 15 lbs of strawberries whereupon he would look over the three young happy faces and declare, "I should have weighed each one of them before you headed out." I never was charged more than $3 for the entire amount of strawberries. He admitted to me years later that he never made any money on those "damn strawberries"! Fast forward through the years, I recall my years serving on the Zoning Board while Dan served as Township Trustee. He was not unfamiliar at our meetings making it his priority to attend during contentious times. There were several meetings he and I didn't agree on the direction of the forum. He publicly viscerated me when we came into ideological conflict. However, that was business as usual. We never spoke about our disagreements as friends. When I would stop by and visit I knew to go out to the barns to find Dan. He never failed to put aside his work. It was as if there hadn't been any passage of time so infrequent were my visits becoming. Once I showed up with my young nephew and within minutes Dan gave him chores to do directing him, while ever watchful under those steely blue eyes. Only when the chores were completed did my nephew pass Dan's approval. That was about five years ago and my nephew still proudly asks "How is Dan Emmett?" I would run into Dan at Richfield Restaurant and with great delight be asked to join him over coffee. One day, my dog went missing. I looked and looked for him. I finally ended up at Dan Emmetts in tears describing my Teddy Bear dog. He listened quietly and then assured me my dog would show up. The next day Dan stopped by my house to see if my beloved dog came home. He did and I joyfully had Dan meet him. That was sufficient for Dan, who mentioned he had work to do and drove off in his old beat up, white pick up truck. I would see Alice up at Country Counter and she delighted in catching up with me while holding a cup of coffee gratis of the grocery store. I marveled over her cheerfully expressing, "Still playing tennis!" While painfully aware that my knee joints were nearly crippled despite my being 20 years her junior. Sadly, Richfield has lost a great man. Today's young families will never know the salt of the earth Richfieldites who have lived here for generations upon generations upon generations. They won't know the stories of when electricity first began to be lined out into Richfield. Of having looked out across the vast fields and woods to see the twinkling of electrical lights begin to show at night upon the horizon. Every passing day those lights were creeping ever closer to Richfield. They won't know of the great sled races on Streetsboro Road in the winter. Nor will they hear the stories of wagons picking up children to take them to and from school. Or snow sleds used in the winter months to deliver young students. Dan and Alice are legendary. One of the few old timers left who can speak knowledgeably about how Richfield once was. I am amazed if not dumbfounded at the changes they have witnessed. I having been here a mere 40 years yet I think I have seen great changes. Ie, in the growth of McMansion subdivisions, commercial businesses and traffic lights. While I love Richfield it is the old Richfieldites that made it truly my home. God bless you, Dan. And thank you from myself and hundreds if not thousands of others fortunate enough to have known you. We're going to miss you.

Alice, in the decade I worked at the "Country Counter" (2004-2014), you and Dan always always made me smile. You were both always happy, and we shared many laughs while I ran around trying to look like I was working. In all seriousness, I am truly sorry from the bottom of my heart for your loss of "Mr. Dan", your sweet husband. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Please try to smile again soon. I think he would want that. God Bless! Love, Tina Shoults - former hbc manager; giant eagle richfield

Mr. Emmett, I don't know if you ever fully realized just how highly regarded you were by the Twinsburg community. You impacted the lives of generations of Chamberlin and Twinsburg High School students. Your standards, expectations, and old fashioned discipline, sprinkled with a heavy dose of love and compassion are principles that none of us will soon forget. God Bless you and your family, and may you rest in peace.
