Daniel Frakes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 6, 2012.
Daniel Morgan Frakes passed away on October 6, 2012 at his home in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was the only son of Col. Eugene Nelson Frakes and Helen Post Frakes Paxson. He was born on April 21, 1934 at Schofield Barracks, Honolulu, Hawaii. He traveled the world while his father served in the Army and attended twenty three schools before his family retired to a farm outside Charlottesville, VA. He graduated from Fishburne Military Academy in 1951 and the University of Virginia in 1955. He served for two years as a Lieutenant in the Army and spent the rest of his career in the insurance industry, the last 25 years as Senior Vice President of Patterson/Smith Associates in Washington, DC. He loved sports of all kinds and founded the first indoor tennis clubs in Montgomery County, MD and Fairfax County, VA. He served as President of the Dataw Island Club, Beaufort, SC as well as President of the Langford Farms Homeowners Association in Charlottesville. He was a passionate fan of the St Louis Cardinals and the Washington Redskins; but his love for the Virginia Cavaliers was second to none. He served several terms as the President of UVA Alumni Associations including Northern Virginia and New Orleans, LA. After living and making many close friends in Virginia, Florida and South Carolina, he returned to Charlottesville in 2004. He cherished the words written by James Hay in 1903, "I have worn the honors of honor, I have graduated from Virginia." He is survived by his wife and best friend, Martha Price Frakes and their beloved pup, Kringle; his four children and their families: Kathleen Frakes and Mark Hevener of Salisbury, MD, Deborah Dunn and her son Levi of Buford, GA, Daniel Jr. and Brenda Kellogg of Washington, DC, and Patrick and his wife Kelley and their three children Katelyn, Hunter and Hannah of Dinwiddie, VA; and their mother Patricia Fahy Frakes. A celebration of his life will be held in Charlottesville on October 21. Donations in lieu of flowers should be made in his name to the UVA Cancer Center –Pancreatic Cancer Care and Research Program (www.supportuvacancer.org – click "Make a Gift" line or c/o Joshua J. Scott, UVA Health Foundation, P. O. Box 800773, Charlottesville, VA 22908-0773).
