Durham

Daniel James Geniton, 68, died peacefully, January 30th, at Duke University Medical Center. Dan was born April 11, 1950 in Rochester, NY to Andrew F. and Bernice (Pat) Lyness Geniton, who predeceased him.

After twenty years of service in the U.S. Army, where he received his training as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), Dan retired as a Major. After his military service he continued his career as a CRNA, and then retired from Duke. During his anesthesia career Dan held several notable positions including U.S. Army Program Director for the Army's Anesthesia School in Denver, CO, and served as a board member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. At Duke he administered anesthesia in the Pediatric Cath Lab, exclusively caring for infants and children stricken with cardiovascular disease. His life-long interests included sports, politics, music, automobiles, and most importantly, family and friends.

Dan is survived by his loving wife, Claudia Butler Geniton. Also surviving are sisters Donna Brennan, from Victor, NY and Patricia Kinne from Middleport, NY.

A celebration of Dan's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Durham Rescue Mission or the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC.

I just received the sad news of Dan's Passing. Dan and I were friends in Junior High School (Hoover Drive) in 1963 and 1964. We wandered the creeks and ponds of Greece New York together, playing in the water and swinging on the rope swings we found. Dan was one of the funniest people I've met, I remember we were always laughing. We used to carry our bowling balls all the way to Maiden Lanes Alley (two miles each way) to spend our allowances. We would earn extra money shoveling driveways, and spend that as well. Although Dan and I went our own ways after Junior High, I was always grateful to have known him, and I always thought of him as one of the good guys. I know he will be missed by those he loved.

I 1st met Dan on the Little League diamond, where he was the opposing pitcher & I the batter. He had the poise of a winner at 11 or 12, and stuff to back it up!
We next met in my 1st part-time job stocking shelves at Bells Supermarket on the Ridge. Dan again had the pluck of self-inflated confidence, backed up by his steady comedic gift-verbal projections of sense & nonsense spouted from the necessay day's drama of activities, minutia, woven into his general love for the lore everyday social interactions so generated, as well as his ready collection of entertaining Marx Brothers, Peter Sellars, Firesign Theater quotes and much more from the beyond.
We then became musical cohorts in a cross-town high school rock band together with Gary, Mike & Al, & Georgesharing community & indulgence for our popular musical expression.
We went our separate ways off to colleges apart for a short time; we gathered during breaks & holidays to music of Bat & Don, at The Ally back in town.
Dan & I rejoined our lives at college as housemates for a semester, before he enlisted to serve his country.
We saw each other only a few times further as he settled into his Army life away. For such precious past times we loosely shared life as closely as musical friends do together, I grew up into bonds of precious others & into the great wide open many years ago. While Daniel was like mercury in my life experience, my soul in eternal wonder is humbled by memory of his brilliance & greatness & kindness to this world, belonging among other precious loves & family he shared in service to his country.
I miss those loving family bonds we once developed, over time surrendered apart, now felt as Dan's love from out here in the strands of time, in this great wide open. Love.
