Daniel Bartley Hollyfield Jr. WISE, Va. Daniel Bartley Hollyfield Jr., 97, passed away Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, at the Mountain View Regional Hospital in Norton, Va. Daniel was born in the Bold Camp section of Pound, Va., to Malvary Mabel Vanover Hollyfield and Daniel Bartley Hollyfield. Daniel was a strong man, both physically and spiritually, who loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was a devout Christian, and a member of the Church of Christ. He experienced many adventures during his lifetime, including hoboing to the Chicago World's Fair in 1938. Daniel was a graduate of Christopher Gist High School in Pound, in 1932, Caney Jr. College (Alice Lloyd College) in 1934, attended Lincoln Memorial University, where he coached boxing and learned to tap dance, attended the University of Virginia and earned a B.S. degree in 1937 from Emory and Henry College. Daniel began teaching at Dotson School, on the Middle Fork of Bold Camp, where he was appointed principal shortly after he graduated. He later taught at Christopher Gist High School, where he sponsored the debate team and as a result of one of the debates, was instrumental in getting school buses for the Robertson District. Daniel became a sanitarian with the Virginia Department of Health in 1942. He worked in Giles, Montgomery and Wise Counties and retired as Administrative Assistant to the Regional Health Director in 1978. Daniel was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 49 years and the mother of their four children, Violet Grace "Jackie" Sparks Hollyfield; and his youngest daughter, Marjorie Lynn Hollyfield Mize. Surviving are his loving wife, Cynthia Tompkins Hollyfield; his children, Margaret H. Craft and husband, Otho of Wise, Daniel B. Hollyfield III and wife, Diane of Richmond, Va. and Jean H. Weaver and husband, Thom of Marion, Va.; step-children, Rad Tompkins and wife, Bea, Elizabeth T. Neimeier and Johnny Tompkins and wife, Lura all of Pound; grandchildren, Laura C. Mullins and husband, Archie, Eric Craft and wife, Opie, Connie C. Shiplett and husband, Stuart, Luke Weaver, Jennifer Weaver, Olivia L. Mize and S. Adam Mize; step-grandchildren, Jeff Tompkins, Reuben Tompkins, Shannon Tompkins, Morgan Tompkins, Joey Neimeier and Tammy Stanley; a brother, Walter Hollyfield of Millington, Tenn.; a sister, Gustava H. Miller of West Jefferson, N.C.; several great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and numerous friends. Funeral services for Daniel Bartley Hollyfield Jr. will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011, at the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel in Wise, with the Rev. Glenn Young and the Rev. Phillip Bates officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 till time of services at 7 p.m. Friday at the Sturgill Funeral Home in Wise. Committal services and entombment will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, in the Temple Hill Chapel of Love Mausoleum in Castlewood, Va. Family and friends will meet at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home to go to the cemetery in procession. Sturgill Funeral Home 1621 Norton Road SW Wise, VA 24293 is in charge of arrangements.
