Daniel Allen Lindley, Jr. died peacefully December 18, 2020 after a long but relatively painless battle with cancer, complicated at the end by Covid-19. He was the son of Daniel Allen Lindley and Margaret "Peggy" Miller Lindley. He was married to Amy Harris Hoyt Lindley, and they leave behind a son, Daniel Allen Lindley, III and his children: Hannah Alice Lindley and Ethan Ledyard Lindley; as well as a daughter, Helen Stokes Lindley Kelly and her children: Dylan Paul Hastings, Haley Helen Hastings, and Sophia Lucia Hastings. He later married Lucia Waller Woods Lindley, who, after 43 years of marriage, preceded him in death by four days.

Daniel had degrees from Yale, Harvard, Florida State, and Loyola University of Chicago. He was a schoolteacher, professor of English, and a Jungian analyst. He is the author of two books: This Rough Magic: The Life of Teaching and On Life's Journey Always Becoming. Details of a service at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City are to be determined.

So sorry to learn belatedly of his passing - I sent him the email below back in 2019 and he responded in characteristic modesty and good humor - his reply also below -

Hi, Dan -

John Alan Simon here. I was a grad student in the Writers Workshop Program at Circle and took your course on teaching rhetoric to freshman back around 1973/74.

I just wanted to reach out to re-connect and express my deep appreciation and gratitude for your insights and friendship during that time.

Four years prior undergrad at Harvard primarily in lit criticism and history had been both amazing and a little stuffy at the same time.

You helped blow out the mental cobwebs and inspired a lifelong interest in media, futurism, Jung, McLuhan, communication and creative expression.

I recently read your book "On Life´s Journey" - which I very much enjoyed - and it reminded me of all you helped me discover in that time frame back in Chicago.

I´ve attached my most recent bio below if you want to see what I´ve been up to in the intervening years.

Much of my career was influenced by you - as one of the most important and profound teachers on my own journey.

Hello after all these years!

Thank you so much for your generous message. Probably because of my internet ineptitude, I could not discover your vita-type information, which I would welcome. My life is now that Lucia and I live full time in New York, having sold our houses in Connecticut and Illinois. In total retirement I now return to reading Hamlet, and the letters of Sylvia Plath. If I were still teaching (which I miss) you'd still hear familiar ideas. I continue to work with some teachers at my own old school, Millbrook, and I find such work rewarding. And it sure was rewarding to read what you wrote!

I too was one of Dan´s student at uni high. We learned the Lord´s Prayer in olde English which I remember to this day. I also took care of the baby Daniel in old black point shortly after he was born. Dan lindley epitomized the best of teaching: engaging, wise, compassionate and funny. Love to the family

I just learned of Dan's passing and I feel so saddened. He was the most incredible teacher of English teachers I had ever. I took a couple of his classes at UIC and he supervised my student teaching. I am a veteran teacher of English and writing because of Dan's mentorship and wisdom. I saw him in downtown Chicago and thanked him several years after taking his courses and while I was finishing grad school. Dan was simply an incredible teacher and man of ideas.

Dan was a rare person: gentlemanly and kind, with a droll and impish sense of humor, scholarly and professorial, yet never taking himself too seriously. We were sad when he and Lucia relocated permanently to their
New York home. A loss for our Chicago Jungian community at the time. His death makes that loss deep and permanent.

Hi Daniel,

I was a student and a collogue of your father at the Chicago Jung Institute. I also met Lucia on several occasions at the Chicago Institute social events. You father was a generous, insightful and soulful individual. When he was on one of my evaluating committees, he gave me precious feedback which had a profound impact on my Self understanding. I will miss him greatly. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at the loss of your father. He will always live fondly in my memories of what is the best of humanity.
