WWII Army Air Corps veteran, restaurateur, real estate entrepreneur enjoyed sailing, gardening, took joy in his grandchildren
Daniel "Joe" Moroney, 93, of Cedar Grove, N.J., passed away on May 31, 2019.
The Funeral Mass will be offered on Tuesday, June 4, at 10 a.m., at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 339 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove, with entombment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, N.J.
Visitation will be on Monday, June 3, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Shook's Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove. Memories and condolences may be shared at shookscedargrove.com
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Daniel and Bridget Moroney, Joe lived in Bloomfield, N.J., before settling in Cedar Grove in 1952. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
A graduate of Pratt Institute with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, he was a member of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society.
He was employed by General Electric and Curtiss Wright before entering business for himself as a real estate entrepreneur and restaurateur. In his spare time, he enjoyed sailing, was an avid gardener, and took great joy in his grandchildren. He was a devoted parishioner of St. Catherine's.
A strong advocate for public education, Joe served three terms on the N.J. State Board of Education and established scholarships and mentorships to help students further their educations.
Predeceased by his siblings, Mary, Patricia, and Edward, he is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mildred; children, Daniel (Susan), Eddie (Terri), Brian (Christina), and Phyllis Burke (Bill); grandchildren, Caitlin (Christopher), Christine, Connor, Kevin, Sean Frederick, Sean Patrick, Ryan, and Megan; sister, Peggy Fratianni (John); longtime friend and business partner, Stan Hyjek (Beata); and many nieces and nephews.
