Daniel Ng Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 2 to Jun. 5, 2016.
Ng, Daniel 52 Dec. 24, 1963 May 08, 2016 Daniel Ng, 52, of Portland, an exceptionally talented artist, passed away unexpectedly while at the Cottonwood Art Festival in Dallas, Texas. Daniel was born Dec. 24, 1963, in Kowloon, Hong Kong to Woon Ng and Wai Ying Ng and immigrated with his family to Honolulu in 1970. Daniel moved to Portland in 2006, where he married his wife, Sandra, in 2010. Daniels love of art and talent was recognized early by his high school art teacher, Charles E. Higa (1933-2012), who was extremely influential in Daniel becoming a professional artist. Daniels paintings were renowned for their dramatic color and unique perspectives. He was the featured artist at many juried art festivals across the country and created highly sought-after original acrylic on canvas paintings. Daniel was commissioned by the University of Idaho to create an original painting for the universitys 125th anniversary. Daniel had the most generous and kind heart. He was always eager to help friends and strangers alike because he always put other people first. Daniel took great care of the people around him cooking and building garden sheds for his wife, mentoring other artists, and befriending neighbors in need of a helping hand. Despite his great talent as an artist, he was very humble about his accomplishments. He was filled with genuine happiness and took the most pleasure in the simple things - spending time with family and friends. May we meet again soon Daniel, you made us all better people just by knowing you. Daniel is survived by his wife, Sandra Wright-Ng of Portland; stepdaughter, Amber Wright-Mercedes of Portland; parents, Woon and Wai Ying Ng of Honolulu; siblings, Derek Ng and Donna Ng of Honolulu; nieces, Nicole Ng and Olivia Ng of Honolulu; close family members, Kat and Brighton West of Portland; best friend and climbing partner, Edward Dyer of Portland; a tribe of fellow artists too numerous to count; and beloved dog, Cassidy. Wow, I was friends with Daniel Ng for several years. He even came to my school and shared with my students and influenced some art projects. I just didn’t realize he had passed away. This world has lost a lovely man and human being .I want to offer my sincere condolences to Sandra, and the Ng Family. He is thought of warmly by the world

We are saddened to hear of the loss of Daniel. We have admired his work since we met him in the Art in the Pearl years ago. Every year at this festival we have looked forward to seeing him and purchase another of his works. We will miss his eye for beauty.

I feel so honored that I was given the opportunity to work with Daniel over the past five years. Out of all the artists we carry in our gallery, he has always been special--valuing our friendship above all else. His humble, kind spirit and unmatched talent will be greatly missed. I am so grateful Daniel brought Sandra to Moscow, and that the two of them became a central part of our Art Family.

I've worked with over 200 artists as a gallery director, but Daniel was a special favorite, both for his colorful, uplifting work and for his bright spirit. It was a pleasure to have gotten to know him throughout the years and to have him show me his studio and give me insights on being a successful artist. When talking to emerging artists I always told them to "study the ones that win - check out Daniel Ng." I will miss you greatly, Daniel. Like many, my heart is broken. Your patrons at West Hills Unitarian will be sad to hear as well. Here is a photo from your last opening in 2015.

I was shocked to hear the news of his passing! I met him at the Art in The Pearl. I LOVED his work and looked for him at other shows. So much color and playful style. He was very personable and easy to talk with. We'll miss him.

It is with shock and sadness that I read Daniels obituary in todays newspaper. Daniel was our neighbor on Mt Tabor and was one of the best neighbors we have ever had. Last week we the Mt Tabor Art Walk and that brought old memories back of the fun times we had helping with his show. A sweet gentle man who will be truly missed for the kindness he has shown for mankind and anyone who was lucky enough to know Daniel. It is truly sad that we lost a true artist at such a young age, but we who have his artwork will not forget him.
