I was two years younger than Dan and grew up directly across the street from him. My family moved to the neighborhood when I was 5 and Dan was 7. When you're a kid, an age gap of two years seems enormous, and the older one tends to be a little too cool for the younger one. Not with Dan. He always made me feel welcome, whether it was trading Pokémon cards or playing basketball.
I remember waking up and instinctively looking out the window to see if Dan was out there shooting hoops and nearly without fail, he would be, often with Mr. Owens there grabbing rebounds and tossing him the ball. Dan's commitment to basketball from a young age was honestly exceptional, and obviously it paid off. When he started playing on the main stage at Clarkston High School, I'd proudly tell people, "Oh yeah, Dan used to live across the street from me."
I haven't spoken with Dan since high school, but I was so sad to hear the news. He was such a nice, genuine person who had a big impact on me growing up. Sending love to the Owens family--I'm very sorry for your loss. Dan is missed.

I’m very sorry to hear about Dan passing away last week. While playing basketball with Dan was great in high school, I really got to know Dan better when he, Costa and I briefly lived together while we were attending Oakland University and Dan was going to UofM Dearborn.
Looking back, that living arraignment was one of my most fun experiences in college. Dan was a really nice guy and had a loud, infectious laugh that kept both Costa and me laughing constantly.
My sincerest condolences for your loss, Dan will be missed.

Growing up across the street, I have a few childhood memories that come to mind. I remember being so impressed with the dedication Dan had for basketball, practicing almost every day, shooting hoops. I remember meeting Dan for the first time, I think we were both shy 7 year olds. Dan was always a really nice neighbor. Sending Love to the Owens family.

It is with deep sadness i find myself wanting to send my sincere sympathy to Dan's family, although I do not know him. My grandson, Kellan is cared for by Dan's mom.
There are no words of comfort I can possibly give. So I give all my heartfelt thoughts and prayers for family and friends.
