I loved Daniel. I loved the birthmark spot on his hair. I loved him for finding goodness and sitting with our wet backs against the bank of the Seine as we looked up at the now burned Notre Damn and he said, "Can you hear that!?" It was a man playing the trombone at midnight on the bridge. Because he knew. I love him for bringing his friend to Firenze and knowing that life is hard and love can cure cancer. I loved him for loving my 3 point shots 3-times in a row and saying I had no elegance or grace but that was all good. I love him for being his silly self, too cool for school. "You know, Brooke, I dated a girl who didn't shave her armpits." Yup, that's all good, Dan. The tropics are weird. I just want everyone to know how strong and good he was. Sometimes life hurts. Dan was a good soul and because Einstein says, energy is neither created nor destroyed, he's back here. And, like a stalker I will track him down. He not gonna like that. Maybe if I beat him over the head with a trombone or try to force feed him octopus. He'll be back. He is now, in our souls.

I did not know your son, though I was aware of his work. I would like you to know that Daniel's academic work and accomplishments are still being read and inform the dialogue around Ayurvedic medicine. His perspective helped to shine light on the development of this important healing discipline as it continues to find its place in US healthcare. One can see the sensitivity and insight in his writing that he must have possessed in abundance in his personal life and in his way of being with others. Wishing you only peace, J. Rioux

I opened the Deerfield Magazine today and read a memorium that I didn't want to read. Dan was (and I'm sure still is, wherever his journey has taken him) a truly amazing soul: funny, wise, gentle, and far too elegant with a 3-point shot. I had such an enduring crush on him in high school that I started listening to Frank Sinatra merely because he told me his brother Les liked him. We trudged through France and Italy after graduation and had some fabulous adventures, and stayed in some terrible pensiones, and heard some great music. Then we came home, ate sushi off of Gramercy Park, and went to the Blue Note. The next day Dan and I parted ways for years and years. A few years ago he told me he would be passing through Florence on a European trip with his friend. I went to meet him and nothing had changed, he was still radiant, just as he always had been, even after all he had recently been through. That day is imprinted perfectly in my memory. I fell in love with Dan all over again-- while he was busy coming up with a business selling Ayurvedic 6-flavored ice cream as we hunkered down, at the end of the night, in Piazza Santa Maria Novella eating our gelato. Actually, he was going to have 7-flavored ice cream, the seventh flavor we must assume was going to be that ungraspabale ingredient akin to soul. That was part of the Dan's beauty, he saw things the average person couldn't see, and he felt the world deeply. So, as it's coming up to his birthday, I wish him the best in his new life. I hope the love from this plane travels over to him, wherever his soul has chosen to go, and that the pain has been forgotten. I bet he's playing a mean trombone, and inspiring others to dance and laugh and feel.

You have been on my mind a lot the past couple of days, and then i realized it was exactly 6 months ago that you left us...an anniversary of sorts. You are still so much in my heart and i hope you know that. And you seem often to be in the art library...love to your family, Anne

Oh my Goodness...I just purchased Daniel's book, Eat, Taste, Heal. It arrived yesterday. I bragged about the book to my friends on facebook about it only to find out this heart-breaking news. I did not know Daniel personally. I was introduced to him through ZRII. I met him once in NYC and again in Salt Lake City, Utah. I found his story amazing. I want to say to Daniel's family and friends that I am so so sorry for your loss. My love, thoughts and prayers are with you all. With gratitude, Stephanie Marrone

Dan. May we find strength in your strength, love in your love, and light in your eternal light. All of our days are a celebration of each of yours. And, through streams of tears, I find only the words of another.
“Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.
It is in the vast man that you are vast,
And in beholding him that I beheld you and loved you.
For what distances can love reach that are not in that vast sphere?
What visions, what expectations and what presumptions can outsoar that flight?
Patient, over-patient, is the captain of my ship.
The wind blows, and restless are the sails;
Even the rudder begs direction; Yet quietly my captain awaits my silence.
And these my mariners, who have heard the choir of the greater sea, they too have heard me patiently.
Now they shall wait no longer.
I am ready.
Farewell to you and the youth I have spent with you.
It was but yesterday we met in a dream.
You have sung to me in my aloneness, and I of your longings have built a tower in the sky.
And a cry came from the people as from a single heart, and it rose the dusk and was carried out over the sea like a great trumpeting.”
Until we walk again in the rays of a beautiful sun – may your soul find its Peace. Our brother.

I am writing from Australia. I had a brief friendship with Dan, since we crossed paths when we were both on Kauai, but he made a deep, lasting impression on me, as was his way. We have close friends in common. He offered to read the manuscript of the book I'm now completing, which is set on Kauai. I thought he was too cute and made him a CD of all French songs. I read the letter of aloha he addressed to his family and friends and I want to remind you of the love, love, love that he leaves with you and will continue to generate for ages. Reading about his life, I know more about you and Houlton and am filled with gratitude to you for nurturing this beautiful, unique, spectacular man. I understand the words of his Quebecois grandparents profoundly; yes, indeed, this love... what more could you ask for?
Aloha, always, from SO many people who adore your dearest Daniel

Dear Rhoda Family,
I was not lucky enough to have been well acquainted with Daniel; in fact, we were not acquainted at all, but we attended the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology at the same time--I, in the M.A. program and he, in the Ph.D program, and we had many mutual friends. My one and only tie to Daniel was the gentle, kind glance we exchanged after a meeting at school we had both attended last year. For reasons that are only now understandable to me, the memory of that few seconds is burned into my memory forever. I knew instantly he was special and I hoped to eventually have the pleasure of becoming acquainted. It was not long after that he popped up somewhere around my facebook and I recognized him. I wanted to say something to him, but I was just too shy. I was greatly impressed by his many accomplishments at a young age, but I was most impressed with his grace and beautiful presence. I will forever regret inadvertently passing up the lucky opportunity that I was given to know him, and he leaves me with the reminder that we must cherish and hold one another every second of every day. I wish you so much peace and comfort in your grief.
Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Dear Richard, Cis and Les
I (Tory Painter, the daughter of Dot Castonguay who was the daughter of Albena and Richard's cousin) just heard from Carolyn and Gene Michaud (my aunt and uncle) about your terrible loss. Although this is a sad time, it was so wonderful to read of Dan's interests and accomplishments! I am so sorry that I never got to know him as an adult. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope it is a great comfort to know that Dan lived life to the fullest. It looks like he had the courage to chase his dreams! He leaves a legacy with the many friends left behind who can articulate what an awesome person he was in his life! I hope this will be a comfort to you. I am attaching a photo of our family. Missing is Lucianne, our youngest sister who lives in New York. You will see that this was taken during a visit when Carolyn and Gene were in California. I am sorry that it takes a tragedy to prompt us to stay in touch!
Yours, very truly

Daniel embodied the true and beautiful meaning of Namaste. His gentle soft spoken brilliant light ignited a peaceful quest for knowledge and meaningful purpose. His presence is a gift for all fortunate and honored to have been touched by him. Though thousands of tears cannot begin to console you, my sincerest wish is that you feel the warm healing light Dan exuded reflecting back to you through so many of us who adoringly loved and cherished him. Upon learning of his passing, the words came to mind...
"The bright light dims and soft spoken winds weave through the sand, lifting the grains placed delicately in our hand, and a whisper finds the stillness settling deep within the soul, forever touched by you."
With love and gratitude,
