Naples - Obituary for Daniel W. Smart

Daniel W. Smart, 87, of Naples, Maine, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2025. Born in Arlington, Massachusetts, to Barbara W. Smart and Harry H. Smart, Dan grew up in Brunswick, Maine, where he developed a lifelong love for the outdoors. He especially enjoyed fishing in the Mere Point area and in Cape Porpoise, Maine - two places that always held a special place in his heart.

Dan attended Bowdoin College and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Okinawa as a paratrooper. During his service, he formed strong and lasting friendships with his fellow soldiers that he cherished throughout his life.

His professional career began in the early 1960s with Edgecomb Steel of New England. He later worked with both American Concrete and American Steel, where he earned respect for his dedication and integrity. Following his passion for the sea, Dan became a commercial fisherman in the 1970s - a period he often recalled with great fondness and pride.

Dan loved to cook - both at home and on the many fishing trips he took with his closest friends. Whether preparing a hearty meal on the boat or hosting family gatherings, his cooking always brought people together and reflected his generous nature.

He loved his family deeply and had a soft spot for animals. Dan spoiled his beloved pets - dogs, cats, and even rescued baby raccoons that were nursed to health and released into the wild, yet often returned for visits to the family's home in Kennebunkport.

Dan is survived by his loving wife, Vicki V. Smart; his children Carrington (Bette), Tim, Zachary, and Barbie (Luc); and his cherished granddaughter, Lennon. He was predeceased by his infant son, Kimball W. Smart, who passed away before the age of one.

He was also formerly married to Sandra C. "Sandy" Cabell, who passed away on the same day in Rutland, Vermont.

Dan will be remembered for his warmth, humor, and quiet strength - a devoted husband, father, and friend whose love for family, friendship, and Maine's coastal waters never wavered.

A private family celebration of Dan's life will be held at a later date.
