Daniel Trahant Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 23, 2022.
Daniel Joseph Trahant, M.D., of Metairie, Louisiana, died on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at the age of 77. Dr. Trahant was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert Joseph Trahant and Jennie Elizabeth Polito and his stepson, Christopher Scott Fontenot. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Norman Trahant; his two daughters, Amelie Porter Trahant and Alice Trahant Phillips (Tate); his stepdaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Slater; his son, Daniel Joseph Trahant, Jr. (Britny); his four stepsons, Samuel David Slater (Ashley), Noah Daniel Slater (Bridget), Gray Carothers Fontenot (Kristin), and Todd Parker Fontenot; his brother, David Elbert Trahant (Lucille); and six grandchildren. Dr. Trahant was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 19, 1945, and was a graduate of Jesuit High School of New Orleans. He attended Spring Hill College and was an early admission to Louisiana State University Medical School. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, the Greater New Orleans Bonsai Society, and Metairie Country Club, and a former board member with the New Orleans Ballet Association. He was a long time member of the Olympians carnival organization, serving as an active Lieutenant, and for his efforts was honored to rule as King of the Olympians in 2004, its one hundredth year of existence. A physician for more than 52 years, he adored being a doctor and caring for his patients. His patients and his colleagues loved him in return. He absorbed his hobbies just as intensely as his profession. He was an avid watch collector, a Bonsai enthusiast, a passionate traveler, and a horse racing fan known around the Fair Grounds as "Dr. Dan." He was a storyteller with a quick wit and a keen sense of humor, a lover of great food and music, and indeed a lover of life. He was an early morning regular at Morning Call, enjoying coffee and conversation with close friends. Most of all, he will be intensely missed by the family he loved so well. The family would like to thank Dr. Hamid Massiha, Dr. Frank Lau, Neil Romig and staff of Riverbend Therapeutics, and the staff at MedCentris, East Jefferson Hospital, Chateau de Notre Dame, and Our Lady of Wisdom. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Thursday, October 27, 2022 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. The memorial service and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Dan's memory to Jesuit High School or Trinity Episcopal Church. Dr. Trahant,

You were my neurologist when I was 10 years old and made me believe that I could live a normal life. I searched for you today because I never got a chance to thank you for treating me and helping me become a 100% healthy man. I am saddened that I never got a chance to say thank you or goodbye. Well sir, I want you to know that I accomplished everything you told me I would. Rest In Peace sir. I will never forget you. I hope to be able to share our story with your family one day.

Dr Trahant was my neurologist for over 10 years. As a registered nurse I take pride in choosing a doctor that is not only an expert in his/her field, but also caring and compassionate. Dr Trahant was all of those things. I will miss him dearly.

Dr. Trahant was the very first Neurologist that I worked with when beginning my venture into the electroneurodiagnostics world. He was a wonderful person, very empathetic and caring. His expertise and love for Neurology helped to shape me into the professional and person that I am today. I can still hear and see his smirk when he told one of his "jokes". I express my condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.

Dr. Trahant (Doc) was such an important person in my life and I cant believe he is gone. He was my Neurologist since 2005 he always took care of me with the greatest care and compassion. I also considered him my friend and father figure. Doc would always take the time to listen and give his fatherly wisdom to different situations I would happen to be going thru in life. When I lost my father...Doc made sure to call and check on me. He was such an amazing person and I believe the world has given back one of its angels. Doc will forever be missed and in my heart. God Speed Doc
