Timothy Mar Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 22, 2015.
Timothy Yee Mar, 51, was born on 2/22/64, in Springfield, Illinois and moved to Sacramento at the age of three. He passed away unexpectedly on 9/19/15. He is survived by his loving wife Linda, twin sons Shane and Corey, loving parents James and Janey Mar, mother-in-law Darlene Beglau, sister Kim, brother James (Myla), niece Justine, nephew Joshua, sister Tammy, sister Kelly, brother-in-law Steve Scott, sister-in-law Kelli Scott, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Tim was a star athlete on the high school basketball and golf team and graduated from Sacramento High School in 1982. He then continued at the University of California, Davis, and graduated in 1986. He worked as a Civil Engineer with the City of Sacramento for nearly 25 years. Tim's hard work and dedication inspired those around him. He cherished the lifelong friendships he formed throughout his career. Tim's loving nature and interest in helping others was boundless.

Tim enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing golf, coaching basketball and soccer, and organizing fundraisers. Tim's greatest achievement was being a wonderful father. He instilled a strong sense of family with his sons at an early age. He was always active in his sons' lives and never missed an opportunity to be with them. He also took great pride in being a mentor and coach for many children throughout the community while coaching his sons' basketball and soccer teams.

Tim's warm personality, compassion, and his love for sharing stories will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Although Tim has left us, he will live eternally in our hearts, thoughts, and memories.

A wake will be held on Monday, 9/28/15, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, 9/29/15, at Harry A. Nauman & Son, 4041 Freeport Blvd., at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be at East Lawn Cemetery on 4300 Folsom Blvd following the funeral service. Family and friends are invited to Hong Kong Islander, 5675 Freeport Blvd. In lieu of flowers, friends & family may make donations to Shane and Corey's Trust Fund by emailing [email protected].

Linda, Corey and Shane. I've been unable to find the words to truly express how I feel about your loss. Tim was a good man, giving so much to his community and to his family. He will remain an example to others about the importance of being a part of your children's lives, giving not only to them but others who need to see what a real dad looks like. He will be missed.

I first met Tim in the late 1980's when he was a brand new engineer at the City of Sacramento. Tim was one of those special persons that is unforgettable. My heartfelt condolences go out to the Mar family.

Please accept our deepest condolences. We will miss Tim very much! We will continue to pray for you to have the strength to persevere during this very sad time. Unfortunately, we don't always understand why God allows tragic events to happen in our lives. The Bible says, " For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. ~Jeremiah 29:11. It might be difficult to believe right now, but God does have big plans for all of you. "Plans to give you hope and a future." We love you!

My deepest sympathies to all of Tim's family. He has left so very much to be proud of. Linda, you and Tim created such an incredible, strong love and gave that to each other and to Corey & Shane every single day. A love that strong makes you all stronger. These boys are going to grow into wonderful, caring, compassionate men with this amazing foundation. His love and spirit will be with you always. Hold each other very close. You are all so loved by all of us and we will honor Tim by giving all the love we can to those he held most precious.

Tim was a great human being and an example to all who knew him. He was intelligent, patient, compassionate, talented in sports and most of all he had a huge heart and respect for all people. I worked with him more than 20 years and he inspired me to work my best everyday just by being himself. To Linda, Corey, and Shane I hope and pray that you will find peace and happiness again soon. Always remember that he is watching over you and loves you very much. May his memories comfort you during the difficult times now and and in the future.

Tim was my friend and teammate. As a teammate, he made all of us around him better. He studied seriously, played competitively, and made friends happily. He would work hard to beat you on the court and then be your best bud as soon as the contest ended. Tim will always have a special place in my heart. I would like to express my deepest condolences to all of the Mar family.

Tim was my brother-in-law's cousin. I only met Tim briefly years ago, but the kindness I received from his parents is unforgettable. From what my sister told me over the years, Tim was one of the most gentle children to his parents. While the loss of a beloved one is never easy, I couldn't begin to imagine the sorrow and pain Tim's parents are experiencing.

My sincere condolence and deepest sympathy to Tim's parents, also to Tim's wife and two sons.

I will miss talking with Tim about family, kids, life, work, and sometimes politics. Our 'end of day' chats were always positive and up-lifting to me. Linda, Corey, Shane, and the extended Mar family, there are no words or deeds sufficient to comfort. Tim was a model--an exemplary man--who consistently put his family and community before himself, and inspired others toward that end. Your family remains in our hearts and prayers. We are so sorry for your loss.

I met Tim about 9 years ago while working at Caltrans Distrist 3. I called him a Gentle Giant, he is a nicest person you could work with and very generous with his time. I told him that my son interested in golf and since he is an excellent golfer, he offered to coach my son on his own time. Almost every weekend for months, he would drive out of his way to meet us at a golf course and teach my son how to play golf. My son is a very good golfer now thanks to Tim. It is sadden me to see unfortunate things happened to good people. We will miss you Tim !

I met Tim for the first time at a City meeting on September 11, this year. We were at the same table for a day-long training. Between workshops we chatted at length about our kids. It was the first thing he mentioned when he introduced himself. I learned in a brief time that he loved his family, his kids, coaching and his job. And he was funny. I left with a feeling I was lucky to have met him and had a new colleague in the City. I can only imagine how heartbreaking this loss is for those who knew and loved him longer. He made such a strong, positive, impression. I trust that it will linger in the hearts of all who had to pleasure to meet Tim.

September 28, 2015

Tim was always generous with his time, kindness, and knowledge. He made time for all his direct reports and coworkers, no matter when and where. We frequently were the last people on the floor late in the evening and we would chat about work, our families, and the NBA. I am a newcomer at the City, but I have learned so much from Tim. While most engineers hate paperworks, Tim excelled in it and was always the go-to guy for others who found themselves lost in the paperwork maze. Tim always had a kind word for everyone, never a bad word for any. He had a keen sense of humor. His roast of Mehrdad Nazeri on the occasion of Mehrdad's retirement was a classic. I would not only miss him and his wisdom daily, but also am commited to supporting his family in every possible way.

Dear Tim,

I don't know how to say goodbye. Together we shared a long journey and developed a unique relationship based on trust and respect. We listened to, understood, relied on and supported each other. We agreed and disagreed on matters but it made our relationship stronger. You had my back and I had yours. We had a lot of fun years together and I will miss them. I don't know how the office is going to be without you.

I know you are in a better place and in God's hands. I will miss you my friend.

To Linda and Family I would like to extend my sincere condolences on the loss of a wonderful husband, father and son.

My sweet friend Linda. I am so very sorry for the loss of the love of your life, Tim. It was you who invited me into the scrapbook group one Friday night and I was so grateful to have made so many friends all at once, especially you. I remember all of the wonderful stories you would tell about Tim and the boys, and the happiness in your family always radiated from those stories. I cannot imagine how Corey and Shane must be feeling having lost their father at such a young age. But I am thankful you all have many family members close by to be there when you need them. Please let me know if I can help you or the boys in any way.

Missed a great role model for kids who is always encouraging kids to challenge themselves and buy them treats. Missed a great father who might not love soccer but will coach soccer because his kids want to play soccer. Missed a coach who had stepped up to the plate when he does not need another thing to keep him busy. I am sure your kids will grow up to be just like you because you have taught them with your actions.

I have known Tim since high school. Going to a rival school, we had much respect for how tough he was on the basketball court. I later got to know Tim better by playing in various city basketball leagues in our 20s and 30s and on the golf course. While being a great athlete was his gift, his talent was just being a nice and friendly guy. That pretty much summed up how anyone that got to know him well. Just such a nice guy.
