Gregory Schmitt Obituary
Gregory S. Schmitt M.D., F.A.C.S., 63, born in Woodstock, IL, passed away Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Greg retired as a Cardiac Surgeon with Parkview Hospital.
Greg was preceded in death by his father, Daniel M. Schmitt; and mother, Betty A. Schmitt.
Surviving are his spouse of 36 years, Jane (Lowery) Schmitt, Fort Wayne; two sons, David S. Schmitt of Des Moines, IA, and Michael S. Schmitt of Arlington, VA; and sister, Nancy C. Schmitt of Chicago.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Anthony Wayne Area Council, BSA or Evans Scholars Foundation, 1 Briar Road, Golf, IL 60029. To sign the online guest book, go to www.domccombandsons.com.
Visitation: Calling from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road.

I just learned this morning of Dr Schmitt's passing. My deepest sympathy to the entire family. I will never forget the day I met Dr Schmitt in the office and was instantly impressed by his character. He was a great man and will always be remembered.

I am so sorry. Greg helped me with RCIA at St. Elizabeth's. I always enjoyed talking with him. I remember the boys when they were small. I often wonder how they are doing. Greg was such a good person.

Greg was an amazing physician and more importantly an amazing friend. I was very blessed to work with him as a physician as he was incredibly talented. Although he was and amazing surgeon, his greatest testament in my opinion was he was as pleasant at 3 in the morning as he was at 3 in the afternoon. He was very kind to his patients as well as to all of his coworkers. I was blessed to be able to spend time with him after his time of practicing medicine. I was consistently amazed at how many people he had influenced through all of his affiliations and a never ending volunteer of his time. He was a consistent voice of strength and example of what it meant to be a strong Christian man. He always had a soft smile on his face and a kind word. I cannot remember a time where I didn't feel better after running into him then before. I will always remember Greg and the many parts of his life, exceptional physician, donator of his time and expertise, strong follower of Christ, and exceptionally kind man. I will miss him greatly.

So sorry to hear about Greg. I very much enjoyed working with him when he was the President of the Board of Health. He (and you) were always up for anything that would improve the health of our community. I especially remember you two giving flu vaccines to children at the City County building one year when we have a vaccine shortage. He will be missed.

So very sorry Jane. Gregg was such a gentleman. I loved working with him when he was with FW Cardiovascular Surgeons. He was always so attentive and appreciative of the information I would shared with him. We will miss him. Was so looking forward to fun times here in Naples.
