Danny Whitt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 25, 2021.
Danny Lee Whitt, 82, went to be with his Lord Wednesday, January 20, 2021, from complications related to COVID-19.

A memorial service for Danny will be streamed live at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, January 30 from University Baptist Church, Fort Worth. Family and friends are invited to join the service at https://vimeo.com/503259758.

Danny was born May 31, 1938 to Roy and Dorothy Whitt in Bonham, Texas, the second of four children. After graduating from Bonham High School, Danny went to East Texas State University where he was a member of the golf team. After graduation, he began teaching and coaching, eventually becoming varsity basketball coach at Sam Houston High School in Arlington, Texas. There he met first-year teacher Sharon Gardner, to whom he was married for 41 years until her death in 2009. In 2011, he married Chris Williams, with whom he spent his final years.

In 1970, Danny moved with Sharon to Fort Worth to become assistant basketball coach at Texas Christian University, a position he would hold until 1977. Following his time at TCU, he began a long and successful career in insurance. The Whitts joined University Baptist Church, where Danny was a deacon and long-time Sunday School teacher. He also coached RA boys' basketball and men's and women's softball. He was a faithful servant in his community, driving a Meals-on-Wheels route for 40 years and serving on the boards of numerous charitable organizations. He would even return to coaching in 1992 as varsity basketball coach at Southwest Christian School.

Danny was beloved by all, and a man of impeccable character. His life left an indelible impact on everyone he met. He was always quick with a joke and sought to brighten the day of friends and strangers alike. He loved to play golf, regularly beating his age until the end of his life. In his final years, he enjoyed travelling with Chris to see friends and family, even making a trek to South Africa. He took special joy in watching his grandson Henry's basketball games-always the old ball coach, even from the stands-and in making his granddaughter Camille laugh with silly voices. He also enjoyed spending time with Chris's grandchildren, Abigail and Ian.

Danny was, in all ways, a man of deep faith. His commitment to Christ was evident in all that he did, and will be his lasting legacy in the many lives that were transformed because of him. He exemplified the admonition of the Apostle Paul that to live is Christ and to die is gain. He lived his calling faithfully and has finished his race to the glory of God.

Danny was preceded in death by his first wife, Sharon Whitt, parents Roy and Dorothy Whitt, and granddaughter Camille Whitt.

He is survived by his wife, Chris Whitt; son, Jason Whitt and wife, Maggie; grandson Henry Whitt; Chris's daughters, Beth Macomb, and husband Andrew Koeppe, Jana Holmes, and husband, Julian, and their children, Abigail and Ian; brother Kenneth Whitt, and wife Eva Ann; brother Charlie Whitt, and wife Patricia; sister, Dottie Cartrite; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Patricia Steelhammer-Richardson, and husband Jerry, Teresa Williamson, and husband Charlie, Jennifer Williams, and husband Walter, Carl Gardner, Susan Fitzhugh, and husband David, Kathy Rutherford, and husband Michael; and many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Meals-on-Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County, HOPE Farm, or University Baptist Church, Fort Worth's missions ministry.
