Darin Johns Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 23, 2021.

Darin Kimbrough Johns, 53 of Andrews, passed away on Friday, November 19, 2021, in Big Spring, Texas.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life at 10:00 AM, Monday, November 29, 2021, at the Andrews High School Performance Center with Kimbrough Johns and Dr. Bobby Azam officiating. Family will receive friends for visitation Sunday, November 28, 2021, from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM at McNett Funeral Home Chapel in Andrews, Texas. Arrangements are under the personal care of McNett Funeral Home.

Darin was born on Sunday, March 24, 1968, in Abilene, Texas to Herbert Kimbrough Johns and Judith Anne Brannan. He married Karen Lyn Gatny June 7, 2003, in Abilene, Texas, and they have spent 18 amazing years together.

Darin was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church and devoted to his faith. He loved to share his faith with his family and friends. He was a member of the church praise band and had a deep passion for music. Darin was the band director at Andrews High School for 7 years and touched so many lives during his time there. During his 32 years as a high school band director, he also spent time at Franklin Middle School in Abilene, Jim Ned High School in Tuscola, Ballinger High School in Ballinger and Colorado High School in Colorado City, TX. He was honored to use his ability as a band director to push students to their potential which led him to be able to take the Jim Ned band, Colorado High School band, and the Andrews Mighty Mustang band to State Marching Contest! Many say they think he is the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) and the best band director they knew. He helped many of his students pursue a career in music and was always supportive of all his students. He also touched the lives of many students that were not even in the band. Darin was a gifted musician and very well known; he could play just about any instrument he would pick up. His most recent musical instrument love was the bass which he played in the church praise band, on music teams for Walks, and with his Christian praise band Getchasum. Darin loved to build speakers and speaker boxes in his spare time. He loved to feel the music, the heavy bass coming out of the speakers was always his favorite. Darin’s greatest love was his family. He was a kid at heart and enjoyed working on cars, dirt bike riding, and burning rubber with his boys. He enjoyed taking his family to Possum Kingdom, and spending time with his grandchildren. Darin was a faithful husband, amazing father, and a friend to all, he will be dearly missed.

He is preceded in death by his Maternal Grandparents: Johny and Dorothy Brannan Paternal Grandparents: Herbert and Ruth Johns; and Uncle: Robert Garner.

Darin is survived by his Wife: Karen Johns of Andrews, TX.; Mother: Judith Johns of Gainesville, TX. From our first walk together I believe it was #86, I couldn’t get enough of your enthusiasm! Your love for the Lord and your family were so contagious. I am truly a better man, Christian, father, son, and husband from knowing you and the example you set and talked to me about. I love you Bro! Will see you on the bright side of Heaven playing music when I get there. You are missed. Fly high my brother.

One day a few years ago, Darin and I were wrapping up a meeting. We had been conversing for quite a while, and when the meeting ended on a high note Darin exclaimed "I'm so happy I could hug you! Are you a hugger? Well, I am gonna hug you anyway!" As he jumped up and threw his arms around my neck. That is the first thing that crosses my mind whenever his name is mentioned. Darin was a wonderful example of God's love. He loved, and boy did he love big!! Darin showcased that love in the classroom, and made a lasting impact on the students that he saw every day. He is truly going to be missed.

My deepest condolences for your loss.

I enjoyed knowing and working with Darin. He did so much for students. His passion was always visible in his teaching. Watching the students pull themselves together for a call to attention one last time after the accident was truly heartbreaking but inspiring at the same hand. They truly loved Mr. Johns. He died loving what he did and was surround by all his students he loved. He will definitely be a hard teacher to replace. Darin you will be missed. Prayers for all the family through these holidays coming up.

I’ve had a few days to process the news and it still doesn’t feel real. I’m glad that I at least have one recorded memory with me with one of the best teacher, mentor, and friend that I could ask for. My best memories from school came from band, and Mr. Johns helped make those memories even better. I was far from the best trumpet player, but the summer of 2020 (a troubling year for all of us) Mr. Johns helped motivate me to play better, and I can never thank him enough for it. He also gave me a nickname that would stick for the entirety of my high school career “Fred.” From my 7th grade year all the way to my senior year, I’m happy that I had the privilege to have Darin K. Johns as my band director. Praying for your family, friends, The Mighty Mustang Band, and everyone whose lives you’ve impacted. We all miss you terribly. Rest easy Papa Johns.

It is with great grief and sorrow that I wish to express my deepest gratitude, appreciation, and admiration for a great man of GOD, whom has gifted not only our AISD students, but our entire AISD family alike. Many other communities are paying homage to you, Sir. You have most definitely left your musical imprint, your Christian beliefs, and your incomparable ability to freely and openly devote your GOD given gifts to countless souls. I am honored and privileged to have met you through your loving wife and best friend, Mrs. Karen Johns, whom faithfully supported your talent & craft. Like two peas in a pod, you, Sir, were meant for her, and undeniably, she was meant for you. Her eyes would sparkle each time she’d speak about you. No matter the season, no matter the dust of everyday living, you brought my sister in Christ immense hope and joy. One could only dream of having a love like that in this lifetime. Mr. Darin K. Johns, our Mighty Mustang Band will play on, but will do so, having been touched by their musical mentor, whom has made his life’s mission one of incomparable humility, grace, and hope. I know you will be watching down from Heaven’s vantage point, as you direct your glorious band from upon those heavenly and majestic skies. You will not be forgotten, for you have left your mark in so many people’s hearts. We love you, Sir. We honor your life, and we will continue to cherish your memory. Su memoria vivirá.

Sincerely,
