Darlene KERR Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post on Nov. 20, 2014.
Darlene Anne Kerr
May 21, 1949 - November 16, 2014
With family by her side, Elvis singing gospel songs in the background, with remarkable courage and dignity and with thoughts of her beloved Kerhaven Collies in her head, my sister slipped the surly bonds of earth and touched the face of God. She is home now. She was predeceased by her mother Dorothy (1991), father Lionel (1996) and brother Roy (1979). She will be lovingly remembered by her brother Frank (Sharon), nephew Jason (Jodi) Kerr, grandnieces Sophie and Margot, niece Jodi (Kevin) Foley and cousin Bonnie Kerr. Our family meant everything to Darlene. Darlene spent her working life as a nurse's aid and then an LPN caring for and about the many residents at the Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home for over 35 years. Our family was amazed by the outpouring of affection and sympathy expressed by her colleagues at the Santa Maria and the hundreds of messages from her local friends and international collie friends. Darlene lived her whole life in Regina, but, along with our dad travelled over Western Canada and into the USA especially California where our late brother Roy lived. My sister's work was important but her life was her collies. I will certainly miss our "Coffee Time" calls from her. Darlene requested no funeral, a Celebration of her Life will be held in the Spring of 2015. Donations in Darlene's memory can be made to Collie Rescue Network, P.O. Box 75, Hornepayne, Ontario P0M 1Z0, Attention: Jennifer MacDonald.
"Now that you live here in my chest
Anywhere that we sit is a mountaintop
What used to be pain is a lovely bench
Where we can rest under the roses."

Despite the passage of time, I keenly recall Darlene's sense of humor, her talent for writing and her informative posts for our online Collie boards. Things are not quite the same with the forums today, but I am grateful to have known Darlene. She was truly a ray of sunshine. Until we all meet again with our Collies, sending best wishes to all who shared her friendship.

I never met Darlene in person, but shared her love of the Collie breed through several online forums. We all enjoyed her stories, poems and expert advice for a number of years. Her willingness to help wherever she could share her expertise will never be forgotten. She will be missed.

A very special friend who I met on several Collie groups about 20 years ago. We shared many of the same ideas and were really close friends. I will miss her so much but will follow how her dogs are going in their new homes and know she is with Freedom and Gypsy.

Darlene and I met in the www sharing our love for Collies. I admired her confidence in her breeding and being proud of what she achieved and she could be, having bred some wonderful dogs that will be her legacy in the world of Collies, her beloved Simon will do his share in Europe. What applies for our beloved Collies I wish is true for her: Collies do not die, they earn their wings and learn to fly .......... never to be forgotten, Darlene!

We were never able to meet in person (I sure wish that we could have), but Darlene and I started a friendship when I acquired a rescue Collie about 10 years ago in the Indiana/Ohio region of the US. Shamus came from Michigan, and in tracing his pedigree his sire happened to trace back to some of Darlene's dogs. I contacted her to get more information about his background, and she was wonderful about providing photos, talking about the wonderful personality of his sire, etc. From then on, we kept in touch and talked about Collies throughout the years. Then, with the advent of Facebook, it simply expanded! :) Loved our exchanges of photos, information, and fun!! I can't believe she is gone, and will miss her and her vibrant personality very much! I love what Derrick Bornholdt said in another message -- 'I know that somewhere now she is laughing, free of pain and earthly worries, frolicking with her beloved "kids."' Love you, Darlene ~.

Frank, Sharon and Families - Leslie and I send our deepest condolences. We were simply shocked to hear of Darlene's illness and passing. We only reconnected with you and Darlene in August 2013 after so many years. Darlene was so full of life and so proud as she gave an impromptu meeting of her gang of Collies and their mother in her backyard. We will always remember Darlene amid her Collies, revelling in all the love. Take care of yourselves and know that Darlene's memory is held dear to us.

I had the privilege of knowing Darlene for 25 years as friend and co-worker at Santa Maria. I will miss her infectious laugh, vivacity, enthusiasm, and good-natured humour. I have many wonderful memories of our countless coffee breaks over the years. I never saw anyone laugh so hard and so long as Darlene over the numerous punch lines we shared: ......"No Ma'am, I don't suppose you did".. I'll never forget that one! My sincere condolences to her family who I know meant so much to her. She leaves an un-fillable hole in the lives of those she knew. I know that somewhere now, she is laughing, free of pain and earthly worries, frolicking with her beloved "kids".

We never met in person, but Darlene was a happy part of my love affair with Collies and other people who also love them. I enjoyed her stories and poems and was so glad that I found and bought her book of Collie stories, Steadfast, Loyal and True. These are also good words to describe how Darlene felt about the Collie people in her life and the way she was with her friends. We all miss her and send condolences to her family.

It was so wonderful just recently to finally meet (Darlene) at our mutual friend Sandi's home, my long time Facebook; "pen pal", in real life and hug each other. Darlene was a very special lady and highly regarded and loved by so many. You will be sorely missed this side of heaven Darlene. Sincere condolences from our family to yours; and to Dream and Ilmari for losing their best friend. We only knew Darlene for 5 years, but totally enjoyed our meetings and phone conversations. She was so very knowledgeable about her beloved collies, and collies in general, and so dedicated to the good of the breed. The two we got from her have proven to be an endless source of love and loyalty, which are the hallmarks of the breed. Her love for and joy in her dogs were obvious for any who knew her, whether in person or through social media. Her sheer delight in living and generosity of spirit were evident in everything she did. So long for now, my friend; I'll be seeing you.

I was deeply sorry to learn of Darlene's death. Strangely enough, the day before her death, I unknowingly e-mailed her a newspaper photo of her beloved Kalan (father of Ilmari) walking with me in a Halifax park. Darlene was so conscientious about responding to any e-mail update about "KK" that I had a sinking feeling something must be wrong, and was so very sad when I saw her obituary online. Although we never met in person, she brought great joy into my life through Kalan. Her death is a great loss, and my heart goes out to her family, including her beloved Dream and Ilmari. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her, and by those whose lives she touched.
