Darlene Gertrude Stewart died peacefully in her sleep on December 31, 2020, at the age of 91. Her passing is deeply mourned by her surviving children and family: Cordelia Finke (Keith), Sabrina Stewart, Guy Stewart, Christopher Stewart (Renee), Clarissa Stewart; grandchildren Drew Finke, Erin Olsen (Robert), Dylan Rose; beloved sister, Marilyn Roushar of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and nieces and nephew.
Darlene was born on July 10, 1929 in Marshalltown, Iowa to Guy Howard Morris and Helen Marie (Pink) Morris. Darlene met husband George in Salt Lake City, Utah where they were married on November 28, 1957. They began raising their family in Spokane, Washington, where George was a professor at Gonzaga University. His job at Texas Women’s University brought the family to Denton, Texas in 1970, where Darlene and George lived out their lives. Darlene quickly became involved in the Immaculate Conception Catholic community and was active in groups such as Saint Francis’ Circle, the Golden Agers, and the Altar Society. Her charitable work soon extended to the larger Denton community, and she has been known throughout the years for her service to Denton charities including the Denton Christian Preschool and the Denton Community Food Room. Her involvement in church and volunteer work have been the source of many lifelong friendships. Darlene often encouraged her children to join in her many charitable activities, inspiring them to emulate her life of generosity.
The family is grateful to the staff of Carriage House Assisted Living for their kindness and loving care. A private ceremony this week will be followed later in the year by a celebration of Darlene’s life. Memorial donations may be made to these charities which were dear to Darlene’s heart; Monsignor King Outreach Center, Denton Community Food Center and Denton Christian Preschool.

Sweet Stewart children, Your Mother was a wonderful friend to my sister, Sara Carey. Darlene always made me feel we had been friends just like Sara and Pat. Your family made me welcome when I visited Sara and Pat and then just Sara. I can almost taste your Dad's bread! Sara kept a big bag of his bakers' yeast, prominently displayed in her kitchen. Guy, thank you for the kindness you showed to Sara. Best was when the bathroom ceiling collapsed and we didn't notice until one of us made a visit there. Guy arrived, stopped the leak, turned the AC back on and installed a new and beautiful the ceiling within the week. Thank you for having kind, beautiful parents. Julie Noble Holmes, Cañon City CO

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your Mother. She was a dear friend of my Mother's before her passing. They spent many years together with the Alter Society and their friendship grew over the years. I know my Mother, Joyce Coffey, has welcomed her friend to Heaven with open arms. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family during this difficult time. May God give you strength and comfort.

My husband and I met and worked with Darlene at the Food center in Denton where we lived 2006-2010. Sharing with her my difficulty with adjusting to TX as Northerners I remember her reassuring me that she had that same feeling when her family moved to TX! What a wonderful laugh she had, and despite some health issues, she kept showing up! A wonderful, gracious woman- I'll miss her. Rita Jones

Dear Stewart Family - I am sorry to hear of Darlene's passing. She was a dear friend and our husbands were friends on the faculty at TWU. Many memories of being in a dining out group at TWU and being in a needlework group that met a couple times a month. Many memories of good times and she will be missed. Pat Bennett

Dearest Stewart Family,
We are so sorry for your loss. Your mother lived a wonderfully long life and was always the sweetest. Hugs to you all. My mother joined her in Heaven just a few days after her. A nice thought to think they will see each other there! Love and hugs, ~Jacque Vogel Bresnahan

Sabrina, Guy, Cordelia, Chris, and Clarissa - It is with a heavy heart that I heard the news of your mother. She and my mother have been friends for a decades and so our families have also been intertwined. Even during the pandemic they kept in touch by phone, and Guy has been so helpful in keeping my mom updated. I was fortunate to go to several of the ladies’ lunches when in Denton, and your mom was always a source of good humor! It was a delight to hear about all of you and get your mom’s take on all sorts of things going on. My mom has lost a dear friend. I share a small part of her and your loss and want you to know how much I enjoyed her intelligent, kind, humorous, and joyful take on life. Love to you all. Eileen
