Darr A. Nielson passed away February 17, 2010, at the Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah.
I was born June 6, 1929, to Rasmuss Fredrick and Emma Mae Barron Nielson in Sigurd, Utah.
I married Charlene Ann Clark. We had two beautiful kids, Theresa Ann (Jack) Hill and Tony (Darr Anthony). They gave me 8 grandkids: Dari Ann Hill (Christian Wininger), JC Hill, Spencer Hill, Michael Hill, Parker Hill, Zane Nielson, Jackie Nielson, and Elizabeth Nielson. They gave me 6 great-grandkids: Dari Christan Wininger, Bailey Ann Wininger, Garrison Nephi Wininger, Logan Jack Wininger, Carter Ray Wininger, Dominique Wininger, Quinn Wininger, Rylee A.J. Woudenberg, Maddison Lynn Nielson and Tadd Zane Nielson.
I was educated in elementary school in Sigurd, Utah; junior and senior high school in Richfield; and graduated from Central Utah Vocational School, now known as Utah Valley State College. I also graduated from Utah Peace Offices Academy and went to floral design school in Salt Lake City and San Francisco, California.
I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I was a past member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Payson and of the Elks Lodge in Eureka (7-11) for 34 years. I was a member of the Utah Peace Officers, Central Utah Peace Officers, and National Peace Officers Associations and the Association for Security Officers. I was associated with F.T.D., Floral Fax, and Tel Floral. I sponsored an annual award given to the most outstanding athlete of year, both for boys and girls, at the Tintic High School for 15 years.
I worked at the gypsum plant in Sigurd for several years; then at Geneva Steel in Orem; then at BYU; then I was a police officer in Payson for 10 years and worked at the powder plant in Spanish Fork Canyon. I was self-employed as a florist at the floral shop we owned in Payson; was past owner in the motel business in Soldier Summit; owned a security business; and was a private investigator up to the present. I had contracts with Kennecott Copper, Sunshine Mining, Hunter Mining, Dragon Mining, South Standard Mining Companies, and Paramount Pictures. I was the sole security for the movie “Footloose filmed in and around Utah County.
I was an avid sports fan, enjoyed horses, and got great pleasure in riding, horse racing, and rodeo. I enjoyed football, basketball, baseball, golf, and the Winter Olympics of 2002.
I was preceded in death by my parents, Rasmuss Fredrick and Emma Mae Nielson; brothers, Ronald F., Clinton B., and Garth Barron; and one great-grandchild, Dari Christan.
And so for the ones who remain, I have these thoughts to leave with: This place is guarded by shotguns three nights a week. You guess which nights. And to my family I say, “I love you very much. Please try to love one another. And so, with that said, I will leave you with this thought: A child is the hand of God reaching out to man. I’ll be watching and waiting for a new reunion. So with all that said, you can beam me up, Scotty.
