We miss the good times we shared with Darrell out at Hickory Grove Court. We were blessed to reconnect with him, as neighbors, after so many years.
We'll never forget Darrell or the richness of our experiences with him. Our fond memories of times spent with Darrell will always be with us.

May you find peace in this time of loss. I live in Istanbul, Turkey where the tap water isn't considered safe enough to use. It has made me appreciate the work of people like Darrel who make sure that Iowans can turn on a tap and receive beautiful, clean water everyday. I appreciate his service to Cedar Rapids and Ames very much.

I was a lifelong friend of Darrell's. We were in the same class at Beardshear Elementary School. We stayed in close contact for many years after high school, but we lost touch when I married and moved to Sioux City in 1988. Darrell and I went 'steady' for one whole day back in the 5th grade. Those were the great days of our youth. Darrell was always the first pick on anyone's softball team. He was the only kid in the class that could hit a home run almost every time he was at bat. A bunch of us used to play together in the Ames Cemetery every summer. It was like a park to us when we were kids. When I visit his grave, I'll think back to the warm days we spent there laughing and playing in the shade of those trees. Darrell was one of the kindest people to me in my entire lifetime. I am a better person for having known him.
Peace to all of his family and friends.

I knew Darrel in high school and he was always nice to me. I was a year younger than him. I am so sorry to hear of his death.

We're not "funeral people," but I went by Beardshear School yesterday morning, near the Ames Cemetery, where, I know Darrell enjoyed the bike racing track that my brother, Steve, set up and organized for all of them as kids. I know Darrell was greeted on the other side and that I'll see him there again one day.
