Darrell Markovitch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 29, 2022.

Darrell Joseph Markovitch, age 68, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, January 25th, 2022 after a long courageous battle with Myelofibrosis Leukemia.

Darrell was born on December 26th, 1953 to the late John and Marty Markovitch in Daytona Beach, Florida where he lived until college and then moved to Wilmington, North Carolina to be with the love of his life, Sally. Upon arriving in Wilmington, Darrell began his thirty-eight year career at General Electric Nuclear Division.

He is survived by his wife of forty-seven years, Sally Wolfe Markovitch, Daughter Amanda Love Singletary (Jess) of Raleigh, North Carolina, Daughter Kirstan Hope Markovitch of Trumbull, Connecticut, and Grandson John Clark Singletary of Raleigh, North Carolina. He is also survived by his cousin, Karen Gast-Brochard (Pete) of Cocoa, FL, dearest in-laws, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Darrell began his surfing obsession in the early 1970's. He was an avid surfer for nearly forty-five years. His love of the sea never stopped. His love of fishing took over in his later years. He was complete in or on the water. He always said the water nourished his soul. He was quick to notice schools of fish, sea turtles, osprey and bald eagles, and all wildlife our beautiful coastline provides. There was not a rainbow, full moon, nor good storm that went unappreciated. He, indeed, cherished all of nature's gifts.

Upon retirement, Darrell volunteered his time to the Topsail High School Girls Varsity Soccer team as an Assistant Coach for several years. His positive influence resonated with several players who considered him a strong mentor during their high school years and beyond.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Saturday May 7, 2022 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church 107 Deerfield Drive Hampstead, NC 28443.

I was just thinking of Darrell tonight and in searching for him on Facebook, I saw Linda Fredrickson had posted his obituary. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing, and sorry I missed the posting so that I could express my condolences at the time. I had the joy of being Darrell's supervisor for about five years in Wilmington. He was truly one of my favorite people to work with. He always had great and very thoughtful ideas about how to make things better and I looked to him often for advice about the work because of his extensive experience. But more than that, I considered him a good friend. He sat across from my cubicle, so we would have terrific conversations about anything and everything, and I learned a lot from him about how to be a good spouse and parent, much of which I apply today now that I have a family. I always admired his work ethic as well as his dedication to his family and his passion for his hobbies outside of work. He was a wonderful man and I feel fortunate to have known him!

Sally, I send you and your family my sincere condolences on Darrell's death. It was literally last Tuesday, the 25th, that I was talking with a friend about how strange it is that we can go years without running into to people we knew "back in the day" and I brought your names up. Darrell's presence in the universe must have been very intense. I hope the following reference will make you smile. One of the things that has stuck in my brain about you guys, is the "blue bowl beef" his mom made. I could be fantasizing but we all may have stopped at their house on a trip to the Caribbean and she made it for us. At any rate, a fun factoid about Darrell. I know you have a lifetime of great memories. Hugs to you.

Darrell is my cousin, who I dearly loved. His mother, Aunt Martha to me, and Aunt Jo to him (my mom) have both passed away, as well as our dads. Speaking on behalf of my mom, she just loved Darrell, always saying when they spoke, "He is my favorite nephew of all times". They had a relationship that belonged to each of them. She would say "Darrell called and we talked for two hours, can you believe it?". When we were kids, mom, dad, me, and my brother (also deceased) would go up to Daytona and celebrate holidays, etc. Once we passed our teenage years, marriages came and Darrell moved to North Carolina with his love, Sally. Darrell and my dad loved to fish together. He was a true lover of God's creation, the rivers and oceans. We were both nature lovers and detested litterer's! Like Amanda says "pick up after yourself". Darrell was a great support to me during my mom's illness and we got even closer. He would call and we chatted on facebook. I feel in my heart that he is with our Lord, our moms were waiting with open arms, and he became one of the fisherman of the sea. He loved the Lord just as he was loved. My heart goes out to Sally, Amanda, and Kirstan and their friends and family. May God bless them all the days to come. I love you all, "Cuz"

I had the pleasure of meeting this man in the 1980's, I was a young girl full of life and he was "Chewy", Amanda's cool surfer Dad. He was always fun to be around. I know he will be missed greatly. My condolences to the entire Markovitch family.

It is with a very heavy heart that I read about Darrell’s passing. God created a vibrant soul with a loving family who showed his appreciation and fully enjoyed all that was made by His hands. We can be assured, as believers, that we will see Darrell in full health and reflecting the beauty of God’s glory upon him.
