Darrell Shane Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 14 to May 21, 2023.
Darrell was born on October 7, 1941, in Leavenworth, WA to Rev. Willis E. Shane and Shirley (Cole) Shane and passed away on April 25, 2023, in Spokane, WA. He graduated from North Central High School in Spokane WA. In 1959, Darrell entered the USAF and served until 1961. He attended EWSC and graduated in 1966 with a BA in Business Education and Health Professions Education.

After graduation, Darrell went to work for Boeing as an Engineer until 1968. He then joined the Seattle Parks Department as a police officer in Narcotics until 1970. At that time, he moved to Spokane and attended Gonzaga University Law School for a year. Darrell opened his own business, Shane's Process Serving.

In 1971, Darrell returned to EWSC and obtained his K-12 Certification in teaching. He started his teaching and coaching career in Wilson Creek, WA for 2 years and then taught and coached in Lacrosse, WA for another 2 years.

In 1976, Darrell met Judy Pointer and they were married by Darrell's father on February 17, 1978. He was hired by the East Valley School district, teaching at East Valley Junior High in 1978-1979 and in 1980 transferred to Mountainview Junior High School, teaching and coaching until 1989. He then transferred to the East Valley High School for one year. In 1992, Darrell received his master's degree from Gonzaga in School Administration. He taught at East Valley High School until he was medically retired in 1997.

Darrell taught 8th grade science and PE in the junior high schools and taught business education at the high school. He coached boys' basketball and football, and girls' basketball and softball throughout his career. He loved the kids in all of his endeavors in the classroom and athletics.

Golf was a passion and he played every chance he got. Darrell was a huge sports fan his whole life. He loved the Mariners and Seahawks, but his absolute favorite was Spokane Chiefs Hockey where he and Judy had season tickets for 32 years.

Darrell and Judy traveled after retirement, to Europe, through the Panama Canal, the Caribbean and the east coast from New York to Montreal. In addition, Darrell and Judy enjoyed traveling in their motorhome.

Illnesses plagued Darrell for the last 5 years, curtailing the traveling he loved so much.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Judy, his son Rich (Jen), one granddaughter, Jasmyn and his brother Dean. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Darrell and Dean have been friends for the majority of my life, our fathers were best friends! When we were younger we would have tag team wrestling matches at Shane´s home in Francis Ave. we always had great times! Later on in life Darrell and I would play golf at Meadow-wood, he would play his Frank Sinatra tapes and smoke a cigar, I will miss those times with Darrell!!

Mr. Shane "Shaner" was a beloved teacher and coach. He made a huge impact on so many of us. I have so many fond memories of him teaching, coaching basketball and softball, and his singing performance I was invited to attend. I always loved running into him at Chief games and always looked for him when I was there so I could say hi. He was a one of a kind and will be missed.

He was an incredible teacher and coach and was loved by many of his students. I loved running into him after graduation- as he always gave a great hug and was genuinely glad to see me.

Darrell was a favorite among my boys teachers. He was very personable and took time to know his students. Darrell spent time trading baseball cards with my middle son. He was mentioned numerous times as being an awesome person and teacher.

After Darrell retired, I had the opportunity to connect with him again as I was in the same exercise class as his wife. He definitely remembered trading cards with my son. Darrell was a great guy that left my kids with wonderful memories of their middle school years.
