Darren Daulton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 7, 2017.
Darren Daulton, the legendary former catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies who won the World Series with the Florida Marlins in 1997, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017, in Clearwater, Florida, according to multiple news sources including The Associated Press.

Daulton, who had brain cancer, was 55.

Also known as Dutch, Daulton was diagnosed with cancer four years ago.

The former three-time All-Star, a right-hander who batted left, was known for his run production. He had 588 career RBI.

Daulton was named an All-Star in 1992, 1993, and 1995.

He won the Silver Slugger Award in 1992 after leading the National League in RBI with 109.

He was born Jan. 3, 1962, in Arkansas City, Kansas.

The Phillies shared their condolences via social media. “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of 1993 NL Champion and Phillies Wall of Fame catcher Darren Daulton,” the team wrote in a Twitter post. The tweet was accompanied by a photo of Daulton in his Phillies uniform and catcher’s mask.

Former Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowl linebacker Seth Joyner tweeted, “RIP Dutch, it’s been my pleasure to know you my friend! I will see you on the other side! #Peace&Love #Philadelphia #Phillies”

John Kruk, one of Daulton’s former teammates with the Phillies, recalled in an interview that former Marlins skipper Jim Leyland told him that Daulton was the linchpin in the team’s World Series win.

“He told me when Dutch stepped in that locker room everyone on that team looked at him and said, ‘There’s our leader,’” Kruk said. “He had so much respect from the league that when he went to Florida they knew they were getting a guy you can lean on. I know Jim said it made his job a lot easier.”

He was married three times, to Lynne Austin from 1989 to 1995, to Nicole Garcia from 1995 to 2004, and Amanda Dick from 2013 until his death. All three survive him.

He is also survived by four children, Summer Daulton, Savannah Daulton, Zachary Daulton, and Darren Daulton II.

I still have them 32 years later & my autographed balls and cards. Who knows maybe one day we will see each other again and I can say Thank You. You will never be forgotten Dutch. Xoxo Drema.

Dutch was my favorite Philly ever! I was lucky enough to tell him that, in person on a meet & greet. He was Much too young. I am a 2x cancer survivor. So let me just say, cancer sucks. Forever in our hearts. ❤

I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family for their loss. I remember watching him as little kid when he played for the Phillies, he will always be remembered. May you find comfort and help in God during this time of mourning.

August 24, 2017

I met Darren "Dutch" Dalton several times at Spring training in Clearwater and when he came to the Marlins in 1997 to help them win a world championship.

Played the great the proper way, hard, tough, clutch hitter, gave 100 percent all the time.

He was also incredibly nice with fans. He always seemed to have time to chat, sign an item, make somebody's day better. He also had great cars, beautiful women all the time around him. He was funny, had a great love for life.

He will be missed not only as one of the greatest Philadelphia Phillies players but also as a wonderful caring giving person to his teammates, his respect for his coaches and managers, his good relationship with the press not easy in Philly, and his unique ability to connect with fans all over this country.

Sincerely, You left way too early but your time on this planet was very productive.

Sincerely,
Ira M. Katz

Darren, Ray and I are going to mss you terribly. We've prayed so hard for your health. You were a legend on the field at the Phillies and off the field. I remember the day we met you. Love, kindness exuded from you instantly. We prayed this day would never come and now the stinging reality really makes it hard to understand. We love you so much and thank you for the great years of friendship you gave us. We so enjoyed meeting you at signings and always looked forward to seeing you again at parties. You will be so, so missed. A special soul like you comes around once in a lifetime, so happy we experienced the uniqueness of you. God bless and protect you always, till we all meet again❤

You were my first baseball hero. I had all of your baseball cards. I wrote a letter to your home town chamber of commerce and it was forwarded to your mother back in 1989. She so graciously sent me a letter and several autographed photos and cards. I cherish those to this day. Darren Daulton, I watched you play for hours. You inspired me in my softball days like no other. Rest easy #10. There is only goodness and love where you are now. Thanks for the great memories!

Will miss that beautiful smile in and around Philly and North Wildwood. Rest in peace # 10.

As a young girl I hated baseball...until one day I watched a game with my dad and "Dutch" came to the plate. A school girl crush turned into a love for baseball, for sports, and a way to bond with my dad. I still have every newspaper article printed about Darren and Game 7 of the '97 series on a VHS tape. I will be forever grateful for you opening up the door to me sharing so many great memories with my dad. Always a fighter, always unselfish and always a leader-my thoughts and prayers are with your family and While I am so sad you are gone too soon, I am happy you are at peace.

I grew up a Phillies fan as a kid and endured many forgetful seasons. 1993 I was a senior in high school in Maryland, following the Phillies closely, mostly through various newspaper sports sections. I was the team leader in points for our County Champion track team that won just 4 meets the previous season and I drew a great deal of inspiration from the Phillies that season. By September I was a freshman on the campus of Saint Joe's University, now watching each game closely. I'll never forget the electric feeling I had when you lined a two run double off Greg Maddux with 2 outs in the 3rd inning of game 6. "This is really happening, we're gonna win," I just knew it at that moment. Its a time in my life I'll always remember fondly and to this day baseball is my favorite sport to watch. I've enjoyed reading the many insightful tributes to you in the press and feel very inspired by all the heart you shared with baseball and the charitable organizations you supported. I know your family and loved ones are proud of the legacy you left and I'm sure I'm just one of hundreds of thousands who you've touched in a positive way with the positive energy you gave in your life. God bless you Dutch. That ball is outtaaa hereeee.

To The Daulton Family: I give you my condolences on the passing of Darren. When I heard the news it did upset me. Darren's work ethic was absolutely unbelieveable to watch. I so enjoyed watching him play on the Phillies. My dad played professional baseball with the Philadelphia Athletics among other teams. My dad also scouted for the Phillies for 33 1/2 years. I am thankful my dad gave me the love of sports. I continue to root for the Phillies. Darren is no longer suffering & is in a much better place now. God Bless & Take Care. I am very sad to hear of the passing of Darren Daulton. It brings back memories of 1993, loving a team of misfits with grit and heart. Darren led the way. I saw him play at Three Rivers Stadium in 1994 & 1995 with my Dad, we came from Cleveland, Ohio. I played softball myself and my number was 10 before I even knew he existed. Still have his jersey hanging in my closet. Very great memories of my twenties following the Phillies and Darren Daulton.

I never met Dutch, but this hurts. Punched right in the gut hurt. Philadelphia lost one our most loved and respected sons. Dutch brought so much to our city. We are forever indebted to what he gave us. The electricity this city felt in of 93 may never happen again. Dutch was made that happen. This goes beyond the game what he did. Dutch, you were loved on and off the field. How lucky were we to have you! Rest in peace DD.

Forever my favorite Phillies player. Your leadership skills were phenomenal. It was a very rare sight to see you lose your cool with an umpire or charge the mound. First and foremost my sincere condolences to the Daulton family you've lost a son, father. husband friend and now a Phillies Legend. He was and will always be a forever remembered for his talent on the field his leadership in the clubhouse and his uncanny smile and ability to connect with the everyday people he met where ever he was on any given day. He was truly the epitome of what a Man should be. I was a catcher myself when I was younger and while my playing days were over I was as passionate about baseball as he was. He always gave 100% . I admired his grit and toughness and when I seen him play I could relive all the great feelings and emotions I experienced . It was thrilling to see him throw out a runner while stealing it was just as exciting to see him get a clutch RBI too. I've never heard anyone ever talk bad about him . Each story i have heard over the past day have all been great. Just like Dutch. Having lost my grandfather to double brain tumors and watching him fight as hard and tough as he could it's extremely painful to see how incredibly fast this disease can consume all but our faith that he's finally in a much better place. May we all rejoice in the wonderful memories that we can share while in this time of mourning and grief. It's the only way to get over the anger of a life taken way too soon. God speed Dutch . May your spirit and soul carry on and your Legacy be as big as your heart smile and Legend.

GOD BLESS THE ENTIRE DAULTON FAMILY...What a team leader - the Phillies will NEVER EVER have another dedicated team leader and player.
I had the pleasure of meeting Dutch two years ago in Philadelphia - Wall of Fame for Pat Burrell - got to have my picture taken with him, along with getting his autograph (when they told us no autographs). I said Darren would you sign my shirt? He said sure, I said well this is the greatest birthday present ever Dutch Dalton and Pat Burrell all on the same day....he smiled and said well Happy Birthday!!! Gave a me a kiss on the cheek and a hug and said enjoy your day.
I said God Bless You, you are an inspiration to all of us. Shook my hand and said thanks.
