Darryll Schiff Obituary

Published by Chicago Tribune from Jan. 8 to Jan. 9, 2021.
Darryll Nat Schiff, 72, beloved father of Lauren and Nicholas, cherished partner of Ronnie Himmel, dear son of Haskell and Molly, and treasured eldest brother of Brad, Lesley, and Rae, passed on December 29, 2020.

A lifelong photographer, Darryll gained international recognition as one of Chicago's most prominent artists. His work appears in many private collections as well as leading museums, such as the Art Institute of Chicago, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Norton Simon Museum in California.  As a commercial photographer he shot assignments for Rolling Stone, Pepsi, and Capitol Records, among many others. His celebrity clients included Robin Williams, Tia Leoni, Lisa Marie Presley, Jada Pinkett Smith, and more.

Darryll's recent work has been featured in international art fairs in Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Indonesia, and South Korea. He recently unveiled his massive 24x56 foot photo mural "Descending to Heaven" in the Wabash Arts Corridor at 710 South Wabash, where it remains on view.

Darryll will be remembered as an outstanding and loving father, adored relative, and beautiful friend to many. Everyone who met him was impressed by his kindness, gentleness, creativity, and sense of humor.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to White Sox Charities, one of Darryll's favorites.  The website is www.mlb.com/whitesox/charities.

After graduation from the Institute of Design Darryl and I parted ways. That was until I attended a Chanukah art sale in a Highland Park synagogue in 2008 or so. When I walked in the door to meet a friend, who was exhibiting, I saw a work with Darryl's name on it. I kept an eye out, then saw Darryl chatting with several people. I stood behind them. He looked over and said "I think I should know you." We reconnected along with 5 other of our friends from the ID. We look forward someday, to holding an Irish wake, in a Greek restaurant for our Jewish friend and colleague............

To all members of the Schiff family... I have known some of you and heard much about the rest of your wonderful and talented family. Molly and Haskell shared images and videos of Darryl´s art with me and after Molly´s passing, Haskell talked of Darryll´s talent and accomplishments. I was aware Darryll was fighting his illness but only today did Haskell tell me he was gone. My deepest and most heartfelt sympathy to all of you who loved him. Sincerely, Janelle Joseph

My deepest condolences to Darryl´s family. I fondly remember going to Darryl´s house on Sheridan Road after school and often to the beach. At Kilmer and Sullivan we remained friends but lost touch after high school. He was such a nice guy with a great family.

Daryll was a great guy and I was saddened to hear of his passing.
Even though I´ve only worked with Daryll and Haskell for a short period of time, one of the guys I liked to call and have discussions with was Daryll.
My uncle was a WW 2 photographer, so we would talk a bit about photography as well.
We would talk about our families, life in general and of course about the paper market.
He was always laid back, and always had good insights. He always had an open ear.
My condolences to the Shiff family.

This has hit me hard. Darryll was one of my first friends. We went to kindergarten together. I can still remember his 8 year old birthday party and he was at mine. Last time I saw him we had lunch in Evanston, probably about 10-15 years ago and then lost touch again. He told me about his kids and I talked about mine. I feel so sorry for your loss and to his brother Brad, sisters Leslie and Rae. I can remember his mom Mollie and dad Haskel even your collie. Just a great family. Life is just too damn short.
