Darwin E. Cooper Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 26, 2024.
Darwin Ernest Cooper, 77, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2024, in Austintown, Ohio, with his

beloved wife, Joanne at his side. Darwin was born January 23, 1947, the second child of Ernest and Claire Cooper, who delighted in their only son.

A 1965 graduate of Boardman High School, he began working at the newly opened General Motors Plant in Lordstown, Ohio, as his "temporary job" in 1967. He was instrumental in building UAW Local 1112, and by his retirement in 2007, "Coop" had served in many roles including union rep, Sargeant at Arms, Vice President and President. He also served as President of the Retirees of Local 1112 and President of 717 Credit Union. Every day

of his life was spent in service to his union brothers and sisters, both in and outside the plant and the union hall. An eternal champion of the underdog, he ferociously sided with justice, equality, and the working man. And the Buckeyes.

Darwin was extremely proud of his large and loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Claire and grandson Adam Colantuoni. He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Joanne Cooper, children Candy Cooper (Mark Allen), Andrew Cooper (Cybil), Amy Richards (Jason), Terri Space (Todd), step children David Colantuoni (Paula) and Gina Colantuoni (John Williams), 10 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, sister Shirley Mike, nieces, nephews, and many beloved friends.

Friends and loved ones may gather for calling hours Monday, July 1, at Lane Funeral Home Austintown, from 1-4pm, with a service at 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations in Darwin's name be made to UAW Local 1112 Care and Share Fund.
