Dave Laut Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 5 to Sep. 8, 2009.

Dave Laut was born on December 21, 1956 and left us too soon on August 27, 2009.

Dave was a proud son, husband, father, brother, uncle, and a friend to many people. He attended our local schools and graduated from Santa Clara High School in 1975 where he was a standout athlete in football, track & field, and basketball.

He continued his athletic career at Moorpark College, San Jose City College, and then landed on the track team for UCLA.

One of Dave's proudest moments came when he was first handed and wore his USA uniform after qualifying for the 1984 Olympic Trials. That was superseded by the crowning moment of receiving the Bronze Medal for the shot-put during the same year at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Needless to say, the family and the community were very proud of Dave of his accomplishment. Dave taught at Santa Clara High School in Biology and Anatomy/Physiology. And over the years, he served the athletic department in various capacities.

He also took the time to be the Assistant Track & Field Coach at Ventura College. He continued his educational career and received his Masters Degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific University.

It wasn't much time later, Dave found his way to Hueneme High School as a faculty member and as a coach once again. Soon thereafter, Dave was selected to serve as the Athletic Director for the Hueneme High School. There is no doubt he enjoyed his new position and was eager to coach the youth of our community.

A short version of the many titles and records Dave has to his credit besides the Bronze Medal are: 1982 American Record of 72ft. 3in., Gold Medal 1979 Pan American Games, NCAA Shot-put Champion 1978 & 1979, PAC-10 Conference Champion 1979 while serving as Team Captain, State Junior College Shot-put Champion 1977 San Jose City College, and the USA-USSR Dual Meet Record holder at 71feet 5.5 in. at Indianapolis, Indiana.

Besides the athletic career, Dave had a personal life too. He was a giant of a man to his family and his friends. Dave was indeed the foundation to his family and he very much loved being a Dad.

It was very common for Dave and Jane to work side by side in their front yard while keeping an eye on their son, Michael.

Of course, he too loved his two German Shepherd Dogs and his cats.

Dave leaves behind his Wife, Jane, his Son Michael, his Mother Dotty Laut, his Brother Don Laut, his Sister-In-Law Rebecca Laut, Nephews Aaron Laut & Cody Laut, and his Niece, Megan Laut. Dave will be missed. But there is no doubt, he will never be forgotten

I was so very fortunate to have been a roommate of Dave's at UCLA. He was a great, wonderful guy. Boy, did we have a lot of laughs. I was blessed to have known him. I haven't spoken to him in years, but I am heartbroken. Peace and love to you Jane, Michael, and the Laut family and friends.

Jane and Michael,
I waited until I found the right words to express our shock and sadness at the loss of Dave. He was the best person to work with. Always a smile and a friendly remark. He will be missed. You offered us a hand when Michelle was in Iraq, and we want to extend the same to you. If we can do anything, let us know. We are all so sorry.
Lots of Love and Prayers,

To the Laut Family,
We want to express our deepest sympathy on the recent loss of Mr. Laut. He was a great teacher and great coach to both James and myself when we attended Santa Clara High School and he will be missed by both of us. We will both always remember Mr. Laut's encouragement and cheers for us during our track meets and for James during football as well. Although Mr. Laut will be dearly missed by many, we know he will live on in the hearts and minds of all the students whose lives he made better. The entire family will be in our prayers.

Sincerely,

When I read of Dave's death on line, my mind could not comprehend it. I remember both Dave and you from SCHS years ago during my first years of teaching there. Life deals each of us trials and challenges that often seem impossible to survive; with the support and prayers of family and friends, we all find the strength we need. We were heartbroken when we read of Dave's death. He was such an inspiration to aspiring throwers. He encouraged our son, Patrick, when he was throwing at Rio Mesa High School. Anything Dave said to try, Patrick took to heart. The highlight for Patrick was being invited to work-out in Dave's garage. Dave was one of the truly nice guys who never felt he was too good or too busy to talk to a kid who was trying to learn the art of shot putting. Thanks, Dave, for all the time you spent helping those who also thought "putting the shot" was a cool event. Our thoughts and prayers,

To the Lauts & Laubachers,
We are so sorry for your loss; Mr. Laut (as I still called him even after graduating 13 yrs ago from SCHS) was an honorable man. He had this great, brilliant smile that just made you smile back, and actually lifted your spirits in the process. He was an extremely humble & respectable kind of man.
He made you feel special, because even after all those years he still remembered your name.
God bless his soul, console his family during this rough time, and help them remember that he is now in a safe place, and although they are hurting deeply because of their earthly loss, Mr. Laut will never be taken away from them ever again in Heaven. Once you get to Heaven, Mr. Laut will be there with his gigantic smile, and you will enjoy eternity in God?s presence.
God Bless you all.

Dear Laut Family,

I was a student of Dave and Don's father at Hueneme High. Mr Laut was so very proud of his sons and his love for them and his wife was obvious from the comments he sometimes made about his family during class.

Though I did not know Dave, I, along with so many in the community, feel your pain and sorrow. What has been written about Dave makes obvious that he was loved, respected, and admired. He is, tragically, gone too soon.

With deepest condolences and sympathy,

Debbie

My deepest smypathy and all my prayers are with the family. Following the career of Dave has been awesome experience. He was a true role model and so down to earth. Our last phone conversation in August was a gem. Then two weeks later, I was the one who had to confirm the horrible news. God bless the Lauts and everyone Dave's heart touched. The vigil and memorial service brought the community together. Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord. Everlasting God!

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
