David Barge Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 8, 2023.
David Lee Barge peacefully passed away on August 16, 2023 surrounded by his loving family in Torrance, California at the age of 81. Dave is survived by his wife Lea Sands and children Julie and Steve Tarantino, David and Belinda Barge, Kelli and Bill Bowden, Denny and Brynn Barge, Donald and Svetlana Barge, Shari Barge, Sam Gundel, Luther and Jennifer Barge, and Emily Thompson. Dave was a father of 8 children, grandfather of 12, and great-grandfather of 13. He also had a large extended, though unrelated, family he cared for and mentored as a loving parent. Dave loved his family fiercely and his biggest regret was that he wished he could have been more present for them.

Dave began his journey in Detroit, Michigan on February 10, 1942 as the son of Helen Louise Hendricks (Barge) and Robert E. Lee. David was raised by Helen and James Peter Barge. Helen was Dave's primary caregiver and they remained close until her death in 2021 at the age of 97.

Dave lived a storied life in several parts of the country including Michigan, North Carolina, and Illinois, but spent most of his time around the South Bay of Southern California including Redondo Beach, Gardena and Torrance.

Dave worked in several trades related to construction for companies including Service Master and Circle M Construction. Later in life, Dave dedicated himself to helping the less fortunate and the recovery community. As an ordained minister, Dave performed countless marriages, performed couples counseling, and oversaw many memorial services. David served many non-profit organizations over the years primarily focused on creating places to serve the homeless and helping people recover from alcoholism. He was at times a board member, a volunteer, and a philanthropic fundraiser raising millions of dollars for his causes, and a humble servant known to lead from the middle. Some of these organizations include House of Hope, The LA Mission, The South Bay Alano Club (where he most recently was caretaker), and Miriam's House LA. Dave was very involved with Miriam's House as it transitioned from a convent to a self-sustaining public charity housing women in recovery who have children or are reuniting from foster care. Dave served as Secretary for over 10 years for the Promises Foundation which operates Miriam's House. He had a special place in his heart for helping kids through breaking the hereditary cycle of addiction and creating safe spaces. He loved spending Thanksgiving serving the homeless a three-course meal and lots of candy and hugs in LA's notorious Skid Row. An incredible legacy to his dedicated life of service includes the founding of the South Bay Roundup, which to date has had 39 years of conventions supporting families healing from the effects of alcoholism and addiction. The annual event is world-renowned and serves thousands of people each year. Some of his favorite days were when he was asked to speak at conventions, and he dearly treasured his time on spiritual retreats.

Dave was just as comfortable with senior government leaders, elite intellectuals, A-list celebrities, the clerk at the convenience store, and the most downtrodden, hopeless alcoholics on Skid Row. His approach to people was simple and consistent. He was quick to smile, had a great sense of humor, showed love, kindness, compassion and respect to all. Dave had the uncanny ability to make people feel good about themselves, and that they were the most important person in the world. Dave was present and always made people believe that there is hope even in their darkest days. Dave was a giver. He relentlessly showed up for others. He dedicated his life to service and said "yes" when people asked for help. With over 50 years in recovery, he humbly remained teachable and routinely reminded us all that he had plenty of years but never enough days. Dave looked forward to seeing his predeceased friends in "the big meeting in the sky." May he rest in peace knowing he left many ongoing legacies that will keep him and his work alive forever.

Services will be held to celebrate Dave's life on September 24, 2023 at Roxbury Memorial Park at 11 am. 471 S Roxbury Dr. Beverly Hills, CA 90212. All are welcome to join us for cake and hope. Please plan to carpool as parking is limited.

In lieu of flowers, a Go Fund Me has been set up in his name to support Dave's favorite charities including Miriam's House, South Bay Alano Club, South Bay Roundup, and Alcoholics Anonymous World Services. https://gofund.me/14631a06

I was at the Alano Club getting a 2 year chip for my partner who was on the board with Dave. When I was in line waiting, Dave came up to say hi, and I told him I was buying a 2 year chip for someone. He immediately knew who it was for and was excited about it. It really showed me that this guy really thinks and cares about others to know who I was getting the chip for and be excited for them. It helps remind me to keep others in mind and be of service in my own program. Much love to Dave.

Dave truly made everyone feel like they were the only person on the planet. What a legend and what a loss. Where there is cake, there is hope!

Dave had the uncanny ability to say a funny snarky comment and make me feel so loved by it. I never had a run-in with him that I didn't leave smiling. My favorite was him feigning to alert security that they were obviously not doing their job, cause, well, there 'I' was, lol.
Love you miss you Dave.

My first memory of Dave was in 1976, I was 11 years old. He got sober with my mom and stepdad, Al & Joyce J. He was a part of my life from then on. From working for him an my stepdad in Palm Springs, to the Palm Springs Roundup and Bob D´s Place In The Sun, to the South Bay Roundup. My wife and I had the ability to see him one last time when he came out to Arizona to speak at a convention in October of 2022.

Dave is a part of the foundation of my sobriety and my new life. He was there for me during my darkest time. He wrote letters to judges to get me released and get me out of jail time. The only catch was that I stay sober and be of service for the round up. This act changed my life. I began to catch the vision of service and slowly under Dave's watchful eye and my great sponsor. I started a new life with amazing people and friends with the common goal of serving others and staying sober. He changed my life and I am forever grateful. I also love his beautiful wife and daughter Emily who have been so sweet to me and kind. The whole world was a better place with Dave in it. I will truly miss him. Love

What can I say, but how can anyone not love this wonderful guy? I met Dave through my husband, John; probably at the South Bay Round-Up. Dave's smile always lit up the room. I loved his sweet hugs and kisses. Dave was so dear to me. He could show you the kindness in his heart just by looking at him. I'm so blessed to have met Dave and will miss him dearly. Dave B. was always a "bright light" in my life since I surrendered to Alcoholism in March of 1982. I was surprised when I realized I was working with his son Donald at a photo lab in Manhattan Beach many years ago. Lots of Men's stags back in the day with Dave, and all of the South Bay Roundups. Dave always had time for me with a huge and a "kiss on the lips" !!! I will always remember those kind gestures and his leadership and love. RIP Dear Friend, Dennis Duke, Hermosa Beach, Ca

My daughter and I met Dave in the lobby of the Marriott Hotel in 2004. We were new and he could tell. He asked us if we had a room I said no and he got us a room. We remained close every since. He came to Briannas father´s memorial and I lost my father in the same year. He promised to be available to her and I whenever we needed him and he has been there for us no matter what. Although he was AA and we were AlAnon & AlAteen He taught both of us how to live the program and how to be of service. We truly loved Dave and his family

There is no replacing Dave B. Our hearts are broken and no words can express the emptiness our world has without him. To quote Father Gerald from San Lorenzo, "The greatest tribute that we can pay to Dave is to put into practice in our own personal lives all the good that we learned from Dave's life of witness. If we can be inspired by Dave's life to continue his good work by being as kind, compassionate and generous as Dave then that is the greatest honor we can give to him..."
Rest in peace Dave. Say hi to the guys in the meeting in the sky.
Love Bryan & Ris
