Staff Sgt. David Russell Berry

David Berry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 23, 2007.
A Wichita man who once was awarded the highest peacetime honor a soldier can receive was killed this week while fighting in Iraq.

The Kansas Army National Guard said Staff Sgt. David Russell Berry, 37, died Thursday after he was wounded by an improvised explosive device.

Berry, who grew up in Anthony, had more than 16 years of military service and leaves behind a wife, Kathleen, a stepdaughter and two step grandchildren.

Holli Gill, his step daughter, said her family has received few details about Berry's death, but she said they do know he was killed by an improvised explosive device.

"The only thing that we know is that there was some sort of mortar attack, and they were the response team that went out to the site," she said. "We just know that it was an IED that did it."

Gill said that one of her step father's best friends, Jerrod Hays, was critically wounded in the attack but is expected to survive.

Gill said her stepfather liked to hunt and was an avid Wichita Thunder hockey fan.

"He was a very shy and quiet guy when you didn't know him," she said. "But when you did, he was very loving and very patriotic. He was wonderful."

Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, the state's adjutant general, said Berry was awarded the Soldier's Medal shortly before his deployment to Iraq.

The medal is awarded to soldiers whose heroism in noncombat situations would have resulted in the awarding of a Distinguished Service Cross had it occurred in battle.

Berry received the award for pulling a driver from a burning car after it had crashed in Kingman County. Rescue workers at the scene credited Berry with saving the driver's life.

The accident occurred while Berry was on active duty at Fort Leavenworth during Operation Enduring Freedom.

I was there at the FOB during that time, and was quick friends with Sgt Berry. While I didn´t know him well, we would have a few small conversations. I remembered how he wanted to play horseshoes, we didn´t have any that we could get at the MWR so he had some sent from home. From the time I did get to know him. Sgt Berry was kind, friendly and very easy to talk to, I was prior Army Infantry so that made it nice we had common grounds.Rest Easy Brother.

I purchased David´s memorial band about 2 years ago. I have not taken it off since the day it arrived in the mail. He will be in my thoughts and prayers everyday especially on February 22nd. Me being a huge supporter of fallen hero´s, I will carry his honor and his memory with me forever. I love when people ask me about the band on my wrist so I can tell them the story of a hero. Thank you for your service brother. You will never be forgotten.

It has been over a year since we lost you so tragically. We will forever love and miss you! Last Friday was the year anniversary. We had a "reunion" with all the guys who were there that day and the ones who were injured and the medics who responded that night. I wrote this poem in honor of you:

On that awful
Thursday morn
We got the devastating
news you were gone.

Our lives were ripped
apart that day
It was never supposed
to happen this way.

Your life was taken
in the blink of an eye
we never even got
to tell you goodbye.

The "ultimate soldier"
is what they all say
but to us we never
thought of you that way.

You're our husband, uncle
brother and son
Papa, best friend
and Big Daddy to one.

It seems like just yesterday
but it's been a whole year
not a day has gone by
that we haven't shed tears.

With the ultimate sacrafice
you answered the call
ALWAYS a hero to us
now FOREVER a hero to all!

I love you Dave and my life will never be the same!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To the entire Berry family. My heart goes out to each of you for this tremendous loss. I had the pleasure of knowing David and his cousin Brent while they were growing up in Anthony. I remember many times that David, Brent Diane and I had so much fun and got into a ton of trouble. But David was always the one to try and look on the bright side. I so wish we could see it now. My son is in the Marines and is scheduled to go to Iraq in September. Hopefully David will look down and keep a watchful eye on him and keep him safe from harm. My sincerest condolences go out to each of you.

Dear Kat, Holli, and entire Berry family,

I went to high school and graduated with David. I always remember him being such a gentleman, a genuinely nice guy! We are all so proud of the man David became....full of "Strength and Honor!" My heart is sad knowing that David is no longer on this earth with us, and full of peace knowing that David had placed his trust in Jesus Christ and is with our Lord and Saviour. We will see him again, but until that time we will miss him!

Through David's tragic death God has brought healing to our class. Our class had drifted apart and not many were looking forward to the 20-year reunion, including me, (I'm sorry to admit that). Now, there has been a tremendous shift in spirits, including mine. Old hurts and disagreements seem to be fading away, and new beginnings appear to be developing. Our class is uniting again and looking forward to our reunion. We will be remembering, with pride and sadness, our fallen hero, SSGT David Berry!

To the family and friends of SSG Berry...It was an Honor and Privilege to be at the church to help receive SSG Berrys casket. It was also an Honor and Privilege to stand guard over him in the church. I have never had a more important duty than that. It was also an Honor to stand outside the door and render the hand salute as he exited the church. I got to know Dave from hanging out with the Moss family as a kid. Whenever you saw Fran you saw me, whenever you saw David, you saw Dave. What great times! As a military brat (My father is retired Navy~30 years service)I know the ups and downs military families face, as an Army Reservist I know some of what our soldiers face. I am proud to have known Dave even just a little. What a proud family you must be. Dave made the greatest sacrafice...he died for our freedom and safety so that others didn't have to. He is on the right hand side of God looking down on your family and may God hold you in the palm of His hand as you go through this horrible time. Kathy, Holli, and Chuck - Dave was such a sweet guy and we all know how much he will be missed. It was so good to hear you say that "we don't need to worry, Dave is walking on streets of gold right now". Remember God's promise that we will see Dave again. I will continue to pray for you all. God Bless you during this hard time.

We are so sorry for your tremendous loss and yet so very proud that your young man would make the ultimate sacrifice for us all. I only hope that you can find some relief by focusing on what a tremendous gift his life turned out to be for so many, and not by all the moments that will never be. May God Bless you in this trying time as he blessed you so richly during David's short life.
