David H. Burton, Ph.D, age 91, of Bryn Mawr, PA, passed away on October 22, 2016. Born in Oil City, PA, he was the son of the late Henry D. and Isabel Burton (nee Duplaine). Dr. Burton attended St Joseph's High School, Oil City PA 1943; University of Scranton, BA History, Magna Cum Laude 1949; and Georgetown University, MA, 1951, PhD History, 1953. He served in the United States Army as a PFC from July 26 1943-March 31 1946 334th Infantry, Company G. He fought and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge (Central Europe Rhineland). He received the following decorations and citations: European, African, Middle Eastern Service Medal; American Service Medal; Distinguished Unit Badge; Purple Heart; World War II Victory Medal; Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Star. While he was working on his PhD thesis, he was a research specialist in Ordnance Strategic Intelligence at the Pentagon (Department of the Army); then he worked in the DC public library. He came to St. Joseph's College in 1953. He left for a year in 1955 and worked at Duquesne University to be nearer his father, who was dying of cancer in Oil City. His father died in 1956 and he returned to St. Joe's. He taught at Cabrini College from 1958-63. He taught night school twice a week at St. Joe's for many years. He also lectured at Georgetown, at Heythrop College, University of London, and at the Polytechnic of Central London while on sabbatical leaves. He was the Department Head of History for 24 years at St. Joseph's University. He won a Lindback award for teaching proficiency in 1962; the Themis Award from the Delaware County Bar Association in 1970; the Tengelmann Prize for Teaching and Research in 1990; and the Brother Sheehan, SJ, award for institutional service. He is the author/editor of some twenty books, many of them in the field of historical biography, including the lives of Theodore Roosevelt, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., William Howard Taft, and Clara Barton. He also edited the correspondence of Holmes and Canon Sheehan and Holmes and Franklin Ford for publication in cooperation with the Harvard Law School. In addition to biographies, he has penned ancillary monographs, viz., Theodore Roosevelt: Confident Imperialist and Theodore Roosevelt: American Politician, and Oliver Wendell Homes: The Political Ideas of Justice Holmes. Another major theme of his scholarly work centered on the Anglo-American "special relationship," beginning with Theodore Roosevelt and His English Correspondents. In seeking to develop an understanding of the "special relationship" he wrote a biography of Sir Cecil Spring Rice, a close friend of Roosevelt, in addition to An Anglo-American Plutarch and British-American Diplomacy, 1985-1917. His collection American History-British Historians was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1976. And The Learned Presidency was named by CHOICE as one of the outstanding academic books for 1988. He is the editor of The Collected Works of William Howard Taft, 8 volumes, and the author of a Taft trilogy: Taft, Holmes and the 1920s Court; Taft, Wilson and World Order; and Taft, Roosevelt and the Limits of Friendship. William Howard Taft: Confident Peacemaker rounds out his efforts to being Taft into sharper focus, and complements his 1999 appearance on the C-Span series on American presidents when he was the "expert witness" in the case of Taft as a notable but too little appreciated chief executive. His hobbies and interests included the orchestra, opera, theater and watching professional baseball and college basketball. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Geraldine Ferrari Burton, his daughters Antoinette, Monica and Victoria Burton; son-in-law Paul Arroyo; grandchildren Nicholas David Burton Arroyo, Olivia Marie Burton Arroyo and David Francis Burton. Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing Thursday October 27th, 2016 7:00-9:00 PM The Donohue Funeral Home, 366 West Lancaster Avenue Wayne PA 19087 and Friday, October 28, 2016 8:30-9:45 AM St. Thomas of Villanova Church on the Campus of Villanova University, 800 E. Dear Gerri Burton and family, I just learned of the passing of Dr. Burton. I knew him for 57 years, since my freshman year as a history major at St. Joe's. In my first class with him he made a remark and I was the only one to laugh. Off to the side he said: Very good, Mr. Preston. At that moment he became my mentor for life. I have been going thru his correspondence with me. He was so interested in my scholarship and my career. As you know, I last talked to you two at my 50th reunion, three years ago. He made me an historian. Thanks, Dr. Burton. Bob Preston, Class of 1963.

Dear Gerri and the entire Burton Family. I am so very sorry to hear of Dr. Burton's passing - please accept my deepest sympathies. I took two classes with Dr. Burton while I was an undergrad at St. Joe's in the 80s and he was truly the best. He instilled in me a love for learning and I credit him for giving me the tools as a student that I have used throughout my life. My prayers are with you.

Dr. Burton, his wife and his daughter were the with a group of SJU students when we studied in London for a semester. Having there with us was such a gift as they provided all of us with a family away from home. I have very found memories of that time and was so sorry to hear of his passing.

Dear Gerri, and the Burton family, my deepest sympathies for the passing of a loving husband, devoted father, dedicated teacher, and a true patriot. I learned my love of history from Dr. Burton in the early 1980s while attending SJU. Any Latin I know I learned from the classic Dr. Burton! Gerri, I have such fond memories of our SJU semester in London. May cherished memories of your beloved husband bring you comfort and peace. Your Hawk will soar for eternity in the hearts of his students! Ave Ateque Vale, Dr. Burton . . . In sympathy and peace, Susan, Mike, Michael, and Thomas Pollack

Dr. Burton taught me for several years at Cabrini College in the 1960's. I remember him as an excellent teacher and a dedicated scholar. To this day, I never hear of Teddy Roosevelt and the Progressives without thinking of him. What a blessing to live a life filled with so many people and topics he enjoyed so much. He was a true inspiration. I only hope he gets to meet and discuss "American Intellectual History" with Teddy and his friends in the after life. I'm not sure we would consider it heaven if he doesn't.

Dr. Burton was one of my favorite professors at St. Joe's when I attended back the 70's.

I took one class of his, and loved it so much that I wound up taking 3 others as electives.

Because of his wonderful teaching style, I almost wound up with a minor in history :)

His spirit lives on---I'm sure some of his book subjects are having some great discussions with him now in heaven.

My condolences to his wife and family.

Rest In Peace Dr. Burton

I had Dr. Burton as a professor at Cabrini. No doubt, American Thought was the best of my many history classes.Wonderful, inspiring, provocative memories....

Back in 1978, David and Gerri invited me and my sister Kairen to spend some time with their family in Philadelphia. Their generosity knew no bounds as we toured New York and Washington together. Dave's wry humour enlivened our trip from start to finish. It's a while ago now, but David and Gerri's kindness is not forgotten. RIP, David. Jonny Griffiths, Norwich, England.

As a history major at Cabrini College in the late '60's and early '70's, I took every American History class that Dr. Burton taught. He was a superior teacher and I felt so privileged to be taught by him. Dr. Burton's depth of knowledge was impressive and his classes were fascinating because he was such a gifted historian and lecturer. Dr. Burton was truly a scholar and a gentleman. I would like to extend my sincere sympathy to Mrs. Burton and her family at the passing of this very fine man.

It was my honor and pleasure to have experienced two courses taught by this remarkable historian. He treated the St.Joe's "evening division" students with such respect back in the late 60's. He raised my awareness of women's role in history back then. An unforgettable teacher. Condolences to his family.
