David Bye Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 26, 2006.
David Bye
His passion was music

Dover: David Roger Bye, 50, of Edgar Bois Terrace, died of a massive heart attack on Sunday, July 23, 2006 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

He was born on June 9, 1956, in Portland, ME; the son of Karl and Jean (Waldron) Bye.

David moved to Dover with his family in June of 1959. He graduated from Dover High School in 1974. Following high school, David chose music and “Sound Engineering” for his career. He became a self-taught Sound Engineer and “one of the best in the business”. Early in his career he worked and toured with many well known musicians, including some with international celebrity. His heart attack in 1995 forced him to discontinue the touring circuit. Most recently David was the “Soundman” at the popular Dover Brick House. Music was his whole life.

Pre-deceased by his Soul-Mate, Clair Brennan, David is survived by his parents, Karl and Jean (Waldron) Bye; one sister, Lynn Brokus and her husband, Paul; one brother, Ron Bye and his wife, Wanda, all of Rochester, NH; three nieces, Amy Brokus, Katie Brokus, and Sara Brokus all of Rochester, NH; three nephews, Daniel Brokus of Rochester, NH, Kraig Bye in Connecticut and Erik Bye in Honolulu, Hawaii; as well as many, many wonderful friends. In his younger days, David was a motocross enthusiast, gaining some awards along the way. He even managed to garner a trophy in automobile racing at the track in Epping. The prize he won using his mother’s Mustang without her knowledge. More recently, however, he just loved riding his bicycle locally. Most of his family and friends never knew that David had a strong interest in poetry, frequently scribbling poems for his own satisfaction. On one occasion, at least, he submitted a poem and received an “Editor’s Choice Award” presented by the International Library of Poetry. One of David’s most recent projects was a self published book entitled My Journal for Life, inspired by his own health led him to sponsor a child through the Christian Children’s Fund for which he has contributed over the last few years of his life. Through it all, music was his life’s passion.

A memorial service will be held at the First Parish Church (Congregational) at 176 West High Street in Somersworth on Saturday, July 29, 2006 at 10 AM, with the Rev. Mark Rideout, officiating; with a reception and light lunch following the service in the Parish Hall down stairs.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Heart Gift Department, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY. 11220.

A “Memorial Benefit”, sponsored by the Dover Brick House and several local bands, will be held at the Dover Brick House, beginning at 3 PM, Saturday July 29th following the memorial service and reception at the church.

Karl and Jean, I just heard of your untimely loss. What a sad thing to bury your child. He sounds like a beautiful person in his soul. He looks like you, Karl. I will pray for him and also for you two that you get through this devastating time. I wish there were words of comfort I could give you, but this is difficult for all concerned.

I did not have the pleasure to know you personally Dave...but I knew "of" you...You were the guy behind the sound board at the Brick House...the place where everyone sounded great. I had made a few informal inqueries about "who was the guy that ran sound" at the Brick House... "I wanted to know this guy. He has talent." I had hopes of meeting you, but I never took the opportunity to introduce myself and express my similar love for music. The lesson learned...Seize the day. A lot of bands will never again sound so good. You will be missed. Vaya con Dios. pwg

Dave was one of the kindest and most thoughtful people I've ever had the honor of spending time with. We'll miss his humor and compassion, and are better people for having known him.

Warmest regards,

To The Family of David Bye,

In the brief moment that I met him and got to talk to him it was immediately apparent to me how passionate David was in all his endeavors. The expression of joy on his face at helping others; from painstakingly using his art as a sound technician to bring out the best in each and every band on stage to raising money and awareness of Prune Belly Syndrome. That joy was real and tangible. One of God’s creations has come home to rest in His hands. The heavenly choir of angels now have a new sound man and their voices will be heard all the more sweetly with Dave behind the board.

God Bless and Peace,

Kurt Walker

Dave and I worked as partners in the carpenter's union back in the late 70's or early 80's. I'll always remember his love for music. He turned me on to a lot of great bands.

Dave, I just spoke with you last Friday as you worked sound on our show with the Molenes. You had recently returned from vacation, and we all had missed you at the Brick House. We have been playing at The Dover Brickhouse since it opened, and I willalso rememebr your gentle but direct demeanor. You always did your best for us, and for the club. I am thankful that we had the opportunity to work with you one more time, a mere two days before your passing. Be in peace brother...
