David Calder Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 1, 2004.
David G. Calder, husband, father, and grandfather, 77, of Orem, Utah, passed away Saturday, May 29, 2004, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 20, 1927, in Orem, to Edgar Hague and Melba Vance Calder.

He married Shirley Erickson on August 19, 1954, the love of his life, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. David served in World War II and the Korean War. He retired from Geneva Steel in 1986.

He is survived by his wife and their five children: Eric (Carma) Calder, Debra (EJ) Wimmer, Diane (Paul) Rudd, Dale (Natalie) Calder, Duane (Kristin) Calder; 24 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his sister, Valene Hubbard; and brother, E. Vance Calder.

David was an active member of the LDS Church. His extraordinary ability to show compassion and love, with his smile and attitude, helped him serve as a dedicated teacher and leader in all that he was assigned. Among his many talents were the ability to serve others unconditionally, and he honored his commitments to his Heavenly Father.

He loved sports and was an avid BYU fan and belonged to the Cougar Club. He played all sports throughout his life. He loved to build things and work with wood, from which he made many beautiful things for his family and friends. He loved our familys annual Flaming Gorge trip. He cherished the outdoors, which included golfing, camping, fishing, hunting, hiking; and, of course, exploring all things beautiful with his friends and family. But most of all, his greatest joy of all was spending time with his family, whom he adored. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

The family expresses sincere appreciation to friends and staff of Hearts for Hospice for their loving care and comfort these last few months.

Friends and family may call Thursday, June 3, 2004, from 6-8 p.m., at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, Orem; and Friday, from 9:45-10:45 a.m., prior to the services, at the church. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 4, 2004, at 11 a.m., in the Orchard Ward Chapel, 670 East 800 North, Orem. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery, with military honors by the VFW District #4.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you as a family. We have fond memories of "Grandpa" Calder. He always seemed happy to see us and we enjoyed his calm attitude and sense of humor. May the Lord bless you at this time.
