David Champion Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 21, 2017.
David Charles Champion – Born September 1, 1945 in New London CT. Raised on Mile Creek Road in Old Lyme CT by Helene and Whitney Hall with his sister Carol. He is survived by his former wife Jayne, his son Jeffrey, his daughter Kimberly and countless friends. He resided in Clinton CT for the last 20 years of his life where he made many dear and close friends.

After graduating Old Lyme High School in 1963, David's life's work was in accounting and he started in 1965 with CCC (Continental Can Corporation) in Uncasville CT where they produced folding cartons. David was the #1 candidate in USA for a training program offered by CCC to be a plant controller. He spent a great deal of time traveling throughout the USA doing audits of plants where he excelled at breaking down numbers and finding that needle in the haystack that led to maximizing efficiency and profitability. In 1970 CCC promoted David to Plant Controller in Windsor Locks, CT. In 1973 CCC promoted David to a larger plant in Pittsburg CA and then again in 1978 where he worked in CCC's headquarters in Stamford CT. In 1990 PET TECHNOLOGIES, a division of CCC, hired David where he moved to Cincinnati where he ran a plant that did $450 Million in sales and had 5,000 employees. He was one of top 3 people reporting to the president of the Company.

David's passions were his family, his friends, golf, the Boston Red Sox, The UCONN Huskies, his '66 Mustang Convertible, 60's and 70's music, his dog Tobi and his house in Clinton where he enjoyed the neighborhood and sitting on his front porch reading.

My father, my dad, my friend, will be missed by many but nobody more than I, his son Jeffrey. Cat's in the Cradle Dad … I watched this larger than life man, an international businessman go from an athlete to a man who couldn't walk 10 feet without gasping for air while maintaining his incredible sense of humor. In the end he was totally reliant on oxygen and his scooter to get around. His final wishes were to be cremated with no formal church services or flowers. Knowing my Dad as I do I have decided to respect his wishes and there will be a small, informal Memorial Service at his home in Clinton, 20 Maplewood Drive, on Sunday March 5th starting at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers please send a donation to the David Champion Memorial Scholarship Fund where all monies raised will be used to give scholarships to students from Clinton and/or Old Lyme High Schools who have interest in pursuing a career in veterinary care. Please send all correspondences to 20 Maplewood Drive, Clinton, CT 06413.

Dave was a great mentor and friend to many - especially nubie plant managers at budget time. He was a great guy who will be missed by many. He made all of us better at what we did. Consummate professional, sharp, witty - one of a kind.

Although I only knew him for last 6 years, he meant so much to me. I always looked forward to us getting together. My memories of him are filled with laughter and love. My regrets are of not knowing him longer and that I was unable to get down their before Jeff's and our vacation. His words were always so kind, caring and understanding. I will miss his hugs and candor and intelligence and emphatic and welcoming advice. Finding peace in your death, knowing you will suffer no more "Dad"

Dear Dave,
I know Tobi and Boman were waiting at Heaven's gate for you hoping the mustang convertible came along so those wonderful afternoon rides could resume. Tyson misses you here on Earth, as do I.
You touched my life in such a special way. That porch will never feel the same without you.
Love and miss you,
