David Choate Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 28, 2025.
David Edward Choate, 56, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2025. Born in Hammond, Indiana, and raised in Tucson, Arizona, David was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, researcher, and friend who brought wisdom, kindness, and quiet strength to every life he touched.

He attended Sunnyside and Desert View High Schools in Tucson and later pursued a PhD in Criminal Justice at Arizona State University-a reflection of his lifelong commitment to justice and community. At ASU's Center for Violence Prevention, David contributed to research on body-worn cameras and the Arizona Violent Death Reporting System, helping shape more transparent and effective policing practices. He believed deeply in doing the right thing, even when it was hard.

Beyond his professional work, David cultivated a rich inner life filled with creativity, curiosity, and loved a good debate. He was a longtime Dungeon Master in Dungeons & Dragons, crafting imaginative adventures and mentoring new players in storytelling and problem-solving. He found peace and inspiration in visiting national parks, where nature offered him space to reflect and recharge. He was also an avid reader, especially drawn to the gritty realism of Michael Connelly's novels-Harry Bosch being a particular favorite.

David is survived by his wife, Annemarie Steinhoff; foster daughters Amber, Gwyneth, and Robin; brother Joe Kadisak (Ashley); sisters Andrea Hug (Jim) and Crystal Pearson; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Carolyn Taylor; brother, Steve Choate; sister, Patricia Counts; and nephew, Jacob Hug.

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Glendale, Arizona, on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 11:00 AM, with a reception to follow.

In honor of David's lifelong commitment to helping others, donations may be made to the West Valley Community Food Pantry in Glendale, Arizona.
