David Correia Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 4, 2013.
David Correia, age 86, of Acushnet, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2013 at St. Luke's Hospital after a period of declining health. He was the husband of Charlene (Fernandes) Correia.

A lifelong resident of the New Bedford and Acushnet area, Mr. Correia was the son of the late Maria (Pereira) Correia and Augustine Gouveia Correia.

David served in the United States Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He served aboard the USS Dennis J. Buckley, a destroyer escort in WWII and aboard the USS Benevolence, a hospital ship in the Korean Conflict. He participated in operations in France, Italy, the Mediterranean and later in the South Pacific. Mr. Correia's rank was ship's service mate Barber Class 3. And as ever the jokester he would state, "I was the only person the Admiral would take his hat off to."

David was a successful owner of Dave's Body and Fender Works, Inc. and co-proprietor of D and A Enterprise, a dry goods store.

In his younger years he was a member of the Montana Club and the Whalers Club, and later a member of the VFW Dartmouth Post #9059 and the New Bedford Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla #65 in Fairhaven. It was here where he docked his boats the "Lori Ann Lynn" and "The Odd Couple." Mr. Correia was also a lifetime member of the Club Madeirense SS Sacramento, serving as the President of the Madeira Feast in 1973.

David was ever the fun-loving "cut-up" who loved telling jokes, keeping people laughing and happy. He was loved by all. His interests varied from boating, playing cards and chess, woodworking, reading, watching the Patriots and the Red Sox, enjoying the Western Channel programs and travelling. His favorite destination spots were Las Vegas and especially Madeira, where he met distant relatives. Whenever and wherever others needed Dave's help, he was there.

Survivors in addition to his wife, are his children, Debra Couto of New Bedford; Noreen Albert and her husband Garry of New Bedford; Ann Raples and her husband Michael of Taunton and Lynn Correia and her companion Rick Bourgault of Fairhaven; 2 grandchildren, Candice Albert and Caleb Raples. He was the father of the late Lori Ann Correia and the brother of the late Angelina Camara.

His Funeral will be held at 8:30 am Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd, New Bedford, followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 9:30 am at St. Joseph – St. Therese Church, Acushnet Avenue, New Bedford. Burial to follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Friday from 5-8 pm.

You couldn't ask for a better brother-in-law than Dave. He was always quick with the joke or humorous story and was the kind of guy everyone enjoyed being around. I'm sure he's up in heaven right now, carrying on with a twinkle in his eye. They don't make 'em like Dave Correia anymore.
