David Crabtree Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 25, 2022.
David Michael Crabtree, 74, loving husband and beloved father, died at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville on January 18, 2022 of heart-related complications.

A longtime resident of Jacksonville, FL, David was born May 29, 1947 in Somerset, KY, to Clyde and Mable (Brown) Crabtree who predeceased him.

Active in the Jacksonville theatre scene in the 1970s and early 80s, David performed and directed numerous plays at JU, FJC, Players by the Sea and UNF. He was a founding member of the theatrical group A Company of Players.

He taught theatre history, acting, and speech at Jacksonville University, Florida Community College, Santa Fe Community College, and the University of Florida.

After earning his BFA (JU) and MFA (UF) in Acting and Directing, David worked at the University of North Florida for 28 years, managing the Robinson Theatre, the Game Room, the Robinson Student Life Center, and finally retiring as the director of the Student Union in 2014. Over the years, David offered endless encouragement to innumerable students.

He loved talking politics, promoting justice, and believing in the importance of arts and creativity in education. He enjoyed traveling, camping, and working with youth. He served as a Cub Scout leader and assistant soccer coach for many years. David often spent his free time on restoration projects, appreciating the history and art of each piece.

After retirement he started a small second-hand furniture business with his wife and son. A talented handyman, he restored furniture for the business which specializes in mid-century modern furniture.

He believed his greatest achievement was his successful 38-year marriage to Ann Marie Byrd, while his proudest achievement was his son Michael Crabtree, both of Jacksonville, FL.

David is also survived by his sister Karen Crabtree Rumage (Craig), brother Jerry (Pam), niece Celeste Stevens (Scott), nephews Alex and Stephan Crabtree, and great-nephews Zach and Connor Stevens, all of Jacksonville, and numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In this time of pandemic, no memorial service is scheduled. A future service is hoped for.

I was lucky to work with David during my 13 years at UNF. He was one of the best people I knew. He had a smile that could light up a room, and a wacky sense of humor. The world has lost someone very special. Ann Marie and Michael, I am so, so sorry.

David and I worked together for at least 30 years and since opening the Arena at UNF in December of 1994 we along with is his son Micheal managed over 500 high school and college graduations. This is in addition to the countless special events David produced in the Robinson theatre. To say he was hard working is an understatement. David was kind compassionate and caring of his colleagues and students. My sincere condolences go to his wife Ann Marie and son Michael, with sincere regrets.

I always enjoyed working with a talking to David. He always had a fresh and unique perspective on just about anything and everything. Not only one of the nicest people I have ever met, but one of the most intelligent, witty and sometimes sarcastic - all good traits in my mind. I will miss him. My condolences to Ann Marie and Michael.
