David F. Eldridge Jr. a retired Needham Police Officer and former Needham Selectman of Greer South Carolina, formerly of Needham died on Sunday March 22, 2009 at national Healthcare in Greer South Carolina. He was 81 years old. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late David F. and Ellen F. (Peterson) Eldridge. Dave was a US Navy World War II veteran. In November of 1953 he joined the Needham Police Department and embarked on a career that spanned over 30 years. He retired from the department in February of 1984. His love of Needham led him to run for and win a seat on the Board of Selectman in 1985, a seat which he held until 1996. During his 11 years old the Board of Selectman he also served on the Norfolk County Advisory Board. After retiring from the Police Department, Dave worked as a Transportation Coordinator at North Hill in Needham. Dave and his wife “Peggy� moved to Florida in 1996 and spent the last 4 years in South Carolina. The beloved husband for 58 years of the late Margaret “Peggy� (McShea), he was the loving father of Ann Gale and her husband David of Simpsonville, SC, David F. Eldridge III of Natick and Robert L. Twomey and his wife Shree of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Brother of Robert Eldridge and his wife Anne of Bourne . He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren of Hannah, Katharine, Kristin, Ryan and Andrew. Funeral from the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave Needham on Wed April 1st at 9:00 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Church at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours Tuesday from 4-7 PM. Interment services with Military Honors will take place at Needham Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials in Dave’s memory may be made to the Needham Police Benefit Assoc. 99 School St. Needham MA 02492.
