David Garfinkle Obituary

David Garfinkle
How do you honor a person with a bunch of words?
My beloved husband passed away in his 71st year on February 23rd after a long and difficult battle with heart disease. Strong until the end he had every intention of getting stronger and healthier so he could return to Florida, when safe, to go fishing in the Keys. I will always remember how much he enjoyed relaxing on a boat, saying "how much he loved being on the water even if he didn't catch any fish." We both enjoyed fishing but David was more interested in eating what I caught.
David was infinitely curious and had a wonderful mind. When not fishing he was most happy in his home surrounded by his books and music.
He worked for CBS News, 60 Minutes for over 30 years as a sound record engineer. "Isn't it great that we worked with some of the giants in broadcasting" he would often say. I would say 'yes, you were lucky."
He was proud of being on the ground floor working for CNN when they were first starting to set up bureaus around the country. He had his own video production company in the late '70s and was fortunate to have worked on a few feature films.
I will remember him as one of the most interesting people I have ever known.
Married for 32 years, he is survived by me, his daughter Carrie and three grandchildren, Eddie, Carmelina and Benjamin. His brothers Teddy and Norman, and his sister-in-law Brooke and her husband Don Freeman. Sadly, his parents, Mildred and Barney, predeceased him.
David would have wanted to show his appreciation and love for his close friends by acknowledging Arnie, Warren, Ruth, Bobbie, and Dr. Alan Bahler, the wonderful heart specialist who took care of him until his retirement last year. I hope they will remember him as a reliable and faithful friend that intellectually challenged everyone he knew.
HIs loving wife, Susie Bieber.

Susie Q, it's amazing how you could write so eloquently at a time like this. I hope that you find peace soon. Holla when you're up to it.

Remembering all. The wonderful times spent together growing up .Missing the family times since we moved to Florida. Still remember times I babysat the boys!, and being angry with Aunt Millie for not giving birth to David on my birthday. Hope you will visit us if you get to Fl.

Thank you, Susie, for describing a complex person in such a beautiful and simple way. He left us too early ... the kids and I will miss him terribly. A few years ago, I asked David to write a note in his grandkid's photo album. He wrote "No one stands as tall as when they bend to help a child". As a grandfather, David stood very tall.
